If your gun is chambered for 32 s&w long, you can use either.
The 32 s&w has a shorter case than the long. Kinda like 38 and 357, only the length difference is greater in the 32s.

The .32 S&W Long fires a 98gr bullet at just about 700-725 fps to get 115 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. The much shorter .32 S&W fires a lighter 85gr bullet at 680 fps for only 90 ft/lbs of energy.
The .32 S&W is a marginal improvement over the .32 S&W Long. That said, it's still sufficient to kill someone when fired up close and personal.

The .32 S&W is a bit trickier to reload that the .32 S&W Long- just because it is so short.
Also, the .32 S&W isn't exactly a common round found in most gunshops, whereas the .32 S&W Long usually is.
