Default Speer short barrel ammo is for less than 4" barrels

We were discussing this in another post. I was curious, so I asked Speer for confirmation:

You are correct. We typically recommend the Short barrel product for
barrels up to a max of 4". Linda

Hi, is the short barrel ammunition designed for a certain barrel length,
i.e. 4" or less? Thanks.

The ammo is designed for backup revolvers: typically, the 2 7/8" approximate length of snub-nose j-frame or j-mag framed revolvers. The powder is fast-burning and allows for sufficient velocity of bullets to expand to efficient diameters in 10-12" of penetration as usually required by FBI or LE agencies. IMHO
This link shows .38+P @ 945 fps, .357 Mag @ 1450 fps.

Sonny, this came up in reference to the fact that the NYPD uses short barrel ammo for all it's revolvers, regardless of barrel length. Of course, nowadays I think most of their revolvers would be snubs.

Sonny, sorry to disagree with you but the powder used for ammo like this is not a fast burn powder but a medium burn powder like AA#5, AA#7, HS-6, Unique and Universal.

Also, we are talking about the "135gr short barrel ammo" not the 125gr Gold Dot .38 Special and 125gr Gold Dot .357 Magnum ammo you are siting in your link. Go all the way down to the bottom of the page you linked to and under the "Short Barrel" table you will see the numbers I quoted in the other thread of 860 fps and 990 fps respectively are correct.
