I've run across some white box ammo that just says "Made In USA" in a circle with stars under it. I believe it's made by Winchester for mainly target shooting and plinking. Not to be confused with Winchester white box. This is different. Anyone ever use it? If so, how is it?

If this is the packaging your talking about, it's about 15 - 20 years old (that's when I bought it). IIRC, I was getting it from a gun show ammo dealer for around $10/box. I think it's just early WWB. This 110 gr .357 throws a big fireball and can cause top strap cutting. Impressive on an indoor range with someone elses gun!

I have a bunch of .38 Special as well as .38 Super (I don't even own a .38 Super!) in those boxes.

The headstamp on the .38 Special is WCC 87, but the .38 Supers are marked the regular way, ".38 Auto W-W Super"

I did notice there is some Winchester ammo in a white box lately where they left off the USA markings. That's because some of the Winchester ammo is no longer made in the USA. Please look for this ammo and if you have a choice leave it on the shelf and buy the made in USA ammo instead. I saw both WWB ammo on the same shelf for the same price.

Winchester white box is still indeed made in the USA.

However, they did import some Israeli made .223 and 9mm back some years ago, and Winchester's "metric" ammunition in calibers such as 7.62x39, 7.62x54R and other metric calibers in the "white box" were made by S&B in the Czech republic. I don't think they have been able to bring in any more since the fire at the S&B facility though...the only "metric" caliber now listed on Winchester's website is the 7.62x54R.

I should have bought more reloadable 7.62x54R as there are no U.S. manufacturers of that caliber, as well as many other com-bloc and European calibers. (7.5 Swiss, .30 Mauser, etc.)

I pick up that kind of brass now and then at the local range. I haven't shot any myself (reload only) but have been around others when it was being used; seems fine. The .38 Special loads are 130 grain FMJ, which was the old mil-spec load. The cases are headstamped as per mil-spec and for some reason have lightly crimped primers. They are also built on the heavy side, like most +P brass, and will bulge if reloaded with deap seated wadcutters (nice and durable for SWC's though).

I think some of the white box .45 ACP was S&B also. If you looked at the rim, it was identical to the S&B case and different from regular WW. It had a rounded edge.

Years ago I bought some Winchester 147 gr .308 in the same white box. It was the most inaccurate ammo I've ever shot. Most other ammo will group about 1" to 1.25" at 100 yards in my rifle, this stuff was shooting groups of several inches.

At the other end, the Winchester match ammo (in a black box) was very accurate.

I also shot up a bunch of the 'Made in USA' white box in .45 auto, I had no complaints with it.

WCC ammo, Western Cartridge Company, is manufactured for military contract, as you all know.

The year of manufacturer is different, that being 1978 vs. 1987. Regardless, it still runs just fine in my Ruger. It did 30 years ago and it still does today.

I think you will fine the white box is a cheaper grade.by not having as much inspection.yrs ago the DCM had white box 22 LR. it was iffy in pistol but fired well in rifles.
