Remington 22LR High Speed ammo

Weather is ****** around here and I've been visiting the local indoor 22LR range. I have this Marvel 22LR conversion kit running on my 1911 frame. I've been blowing up cases with this ammo. It blows the rim off and every time it happens it seems like someone slaps your face. Each time it happened I visited the little boys room & looked into a mirror to see if stuff was sticking into my face! It stung when I had the rim blow out! Had 3 that blew out of a value pack of 550. I notice Marvel has a warning about this ammo on their website, after I got home. I used it all up, so this won't happen again.

It's the first time I ever had a case head separation with any ammo. So be safe, that's why you are to wear glasses shooting guns!

does Marvel give any specific reason why or just a general warning? with the luck most people have been having with Remington 22 long rifle ammo I'm surprised they went off at all. Remington always seems to have an extra coating on their bullets and I wonder if that is the cause? what ammo are you using that does work without any problems?

In 50 years of shooting a .22 I have never seen that happen, and Remington has almost always been my ammo

Don't know exactly which Remington ammo you're using, but I bought a brick of Thunderball. Never again. Many failure to feed, Failure to fire and stove pipes with my Browning Buckmaster. My AR7 also the same.

Quality control of Remington .22 LR has been going down hill for several years. Failures to fire and wide variations in the report and impact are common; no more for me.

Remington ammo and customer service are good, but their lr. ammo sucks. Just don't go there. Wy wife had a squib when a Golden Bullet wouldn't clear the 2" barrel of my NAA Black Widow. The report and recoil are variable with the ammo in question.

This ammo that I used had copper coated bullets, 40gn fmj. The ammo was 25 years old maybe, I got a carton unopened and thought I'd shoot it up inside.

No misfires and accuracy was good, except it blew out the back of the case a few times. After the 2nd time I checked the breach and everything looked fine. I don't know why this happened, possibly over pressure ammo?

i recently purchased some remington ammo, and was not satisfied. out of the 500 rds. about half sounded like duds. several smoked an awfull lot as well. shot out of my k-22, my high standard, and my heritage. all were about the same. never had this happen with winchester. although the winchester ejects hard out of my k-22.

I would contact Remington about your problem. That isn't right.

I have used the old Remington 22LR SV ammo for years without problems. That was from 1970's stock. Recently I have been using Aguila SE or Wolf Match Target.
I do use Remington Golden Bullet in the bulk packs for action pistol shoot and plinking with my Marvel with 9lb recoil spring or my Jarvis conversion units. The only problem I have experienced with these units is ignition failures ca 2 to 4% of the time.
From the photos of the cases with blown rims it appears that an out of battery ignition was the cause.

I thought the same until I read the same condition occurs with Bob Marvel shooting his. See link above.

Letter to Remington - GlockPost

I've had a lot of trouble with remington 22 ammo over the last few years and have a number of people come into the shop who were also having problems. Misfires, squib loads and underpowered rounds seem to be really common. I have had head separations just like the original poster experienced in two of my handguns and one rifle and have quit using any current production remington 22. I never had these kind of problems with older production ammo (I have a stash of 60's and 70's made stuff that still works great). I think their quality control people are not doing their job, I have four of the 100rd packs of Target, still sealed, that have copper coated rounds mixed in with the LRN or empty holes with no rounds at all!

I'm no defender of Remington ammo, but the photos of the case separation reminds me of an accident that I had as a kid with an old Stevens "Crack Shot"; the quintessential kids gun; perhaps one step up from a BB gun; a cheap, falling block action, 22 single shot rifle. One otherwise fine day, a case rim blew out and peppered my face. The cause was the rim wasn't recessed in that old clunker and I was shooting some high velocity stuff. Much like the pre-30's 22/32 "Bekerts", there are warnings to shoot only standard velocity ammo in such non-recessed 22's. After that incident, my Crack Shot was relegated to BB and CB caps only.
So....is the chamber recessed on your Marvel adapter? If not that could be the problem. If the chamber is recessed, then I would suspect that the cartridges aren't seating properly for some reason. Remington 22 ammo is ****, but I'd bet that gun would do the same with other high velocity stuff. -S2

that head stamp looks like a rem yellow jacket that is way too hot for a simi pistol they say not to shoot in a simi rifle

I shot a partial box of their bulk ammo and had about 10% failures to fire from a S&W Model 18. I sent Remington an email, and their reply said that if I sent the ammo back to them, and IF they found a problem, they WOULD CONSIDER refunding my money. They did not mention shipping costs. I replied that I would never again buy Remington .22 ammo. They really did not care, and did not want to hear my complaint.

Concur-thats on target. The gun is probably firing before the cartridge is fully chambered-its out of battery. Once the catridge is fired-the action will cycle. A fully contained (chambered) cartridge-will not blow pieces of cartridge into your face-and if the headspace is correct-the cartridge is more likely to jam-fail to extract.
I'd be curious if the cartridges fire OK in a revolver-if the rim is going to seperate-thats the place where it will do it.

I no longer buy or use Remington 22lr ammo, JUNK.

Please be advised it only happened with this Remington ammo. CCI green tag or CCI blazer 22 LR is 100% without this blowing up condition.

The green tag recoils less. It is also shoots sub 1/2 inch @ 50 feet. The blazer runs well, 1 inch groups at 50 feet shooting inside.

I don't have any other ammo to test.

Ah so. Would you be able to measure the total length of an unfired cartridge-then compare to a different brand? Also the rim may be thicker than standard. Anything that would effect headspace-allowing the action to close just enough to put the pistol in battery.

I don't have any unfired Remington rounds to measure. The blown up ones are useless to measure.
