I am going to have to tap into some of you cartridge experts knowledge on this one.
Here is a UMC 45/70. No one I ask, seems to know what the "S H" stands for.
Approimately what year would that have been made? Value, if any?

" SOLID HEAD "

Absolutely correct, but not what most people think it means. This style of solid head case is what is now commonly, but incorrectly, referred to as a "Balloon Head", where the head area is solid brass but the primer pocket protrudes from the head area and there is a pronounced channel around the outside of it.

For comparison a true "Balloon Head" case is often also referred to as a "Folded Head". Think .22 Rimfire. The difference is they would have either a bumped in primer pocket in the thin brass or an internally supported primer. These last look like rimfires but are really canterfire.

What era would this cartridge be from?

Probably ca. 1880s.
