Remington UMC 9mm JHP vs Hornady, etc

I just happened to see at my local Farm Fleet that they are having a sale on Remington UMC 9mm 115gr JHP ammo - 50rd green box for under under $15 a box. I am curious, on the back it says the ammo is for self defense. I have always bought Hornady/Federal/Winchester defense ammo that runs around $20/20 or 25 rounds. Any opinions on the UMC? Thanks in advance!

Our local walmart carried those in 100rnd value packs a while back. $28 for 100 if I remember correctly. I picked up a few and have shot 150 or so out of my Bersa 9 and my SW9VE and never had a hiccup. Cant say how well they expand but they shoot pretty well. Don't know that I would carry them but I figure can't hurt to have a few 100 jhp around. Cheap Zombie insurance.

I've always considered Remington UMC range ammo. It is good stuff but a little dirty and I have had some failures-to-fire. The express is better.

If you are looking for better range ammo check out Speer Lawman or American Eagle (federal).

But I agree--nothing wrong with having some boxes of UMC laying around. I have a few hundred rounds of the .357 125+P JHP "gold standard manstopper" round just sitting there for zombie defense as well.

I had a 100 round box of the UMC 115 grain load, and found some published chrono tests showing it to give about 1180 FPS from (I think) a Browning Hi-Power.

I fired it in a CZ-75 with no failures and excellent accuracy.

I wondered why it wasn't considered prime stuff, and decided that the brass cases not being nickeled might account for that. ??

It seemed excellent value for money, and I think I'd probably trust it in a fight. But I prefer nickel-plated cases if magazines are to remain loaded for a prolonged time. I now use Federal's Hydra-Shok or HST ammo in 124 grain Plus P loadings. Penetration may be a little better, and this ammo MAY be bettter sealed than the Remington stuff.

I detest Remington's dirty .22 ammo, and have seen their .38 lead HP's with case mouths buckled by sloppy bullet seating. I definitely want to examine every round in the box before buying any Remington ammo. Some retailers may not allow that.

But the price is such that I feel the UMC JHP
9's are a good buy, with good velocity, accuracy, and reliability. I'll buy more, if I find any. I think it'll drop coyotes, two-legged or four-legged. Probably even more effective on snakes. Bit rather use a .357 Magnum on Reticulated Pythons or big Anacondas. But they know about my .357, I guess, because they stay out of my neighborhood.

Remington "standard" hollowpoints aren't expensive and "sexy" enough to garner a lot of attention but they actually are well designed expanding projectiles that tend to feed well even in picky guns.

Right. There are better bullets available today, especially bonded ones, but the Remington 115 grainer has a following for good reason.

That is the bullet Remington used to use to load their green and yellow box ammo with. It's still a good bullet and performs just as well not as it did back in the 80's and early 90's. They were not designed for deep penetration but still good for most self-defense application. Walmart used to sell it for $19.99 per box of 100 rounds. I have about 10 boxes put away for "just in case".

BTW. Winchester had their white box 115gr JHP ammo in 9mm too. This bullet is the old silver tip.

There are better bullets nowadays for self defense..

LAPD used to carry this same bullet loaded to standard velocity as a duty round. It consistently failed to expand when going through clothing and was light on penetration if it did expand.

I'd use it instead of ball if it's what I had, but there are much better choices now.

I have never had a problem with it in a Beretta 92F.
