Herter's Ammunition
Rec'd the 2010 Cabela's Shooting catalog today, 1st pages of ammunition were a new line of Russian made ammo w/ steel cases. Herter's bring back fond memories, purchased a Herter's .243 mauser action and .357 Powermag, plus loaded .357 ammo and lots of components, all mail order. Still have the .243 and it's a fine rifle.
Just a little surprised to see them dust off the old Herter's brand for an exclusive line of Cabela's. Polymer-coated steel cases, priced pretty competitive but not good reloading material.

I don't know. Using a grand old name like Herters to sell low grade Russian ammo just ain't right. Yes , most of the original Herters ammo in the 50s-60s was imported , but first quality and reloadable. They sold primers , powders , cases , bullets , jackets and all forms of reloading tools.
Even Midway is using the Frankford Arsenal name.
Some Winchesters and Brownings are made in Japan. Are they really Winchesters and Brownings if made abroad?
The current Springfield Armory Inc (Ill), while excellent products and service , boasts "The oldest name in American Firearms" , even though they have nothing to do with the historical US Springfield Armory (Mass). They just want you to think that way. Like the Rock Island brand on the imported 1911s from the Phillipines.
But getting people to buy something , while thinking they're getting something else , selling 'nostalgia' if you will , is the new American way.

They've been gone for many a year. Some of their stuff was good, some was not. I still use about 5 kitchen knives I got from them in the early 70s. Similar to but better than Chicago Cutlery.

If you read the add it states that it is manufactured in the USA. Here's the kicker they put that add out as sale prices, the week before the same ammo was $9.99 for 9mm, the add lists it at $12.99

A buddy of mine just purchased a new Sig P238 and a new (to him) Makarov in .380. We went to the range last week to test them out, and he used 2 boxes of Herter's .380 that he had bought at Cabela's for a good price.
The accuracy through the Makarov was not great, but with no other ammo to gauge against, not sure if it was the pistol or the ammo. However, he had many FTF through the Sig, with a second strike necessary on maybe 10-20% of the rounds. After several failures-to-chamber, I inspected the few remaining rounds and found that half of them had their bullets seated so off-center that the steel case was bulged, and wouldn't even chamber.
I can't say how many of the others were in a similar condition...but I don't believe I'll be buying any Herter's ammo again anytime soon.

Are you sure it's made by Fiocchi? What does the headstamp read?
Last time I checked the Herter's black box Select Grade in 9mm it was stamped "nny" which is Prvi Partizan of Serbia.

I bought 2 boxes of Herter's 357 mag and one box of 44 mag from Cabela's a couple of weeks ago. They are marked made by Fiocchi Ammunition in Ozark Mo. They fired nicely, were fairly clean and I reloaded the brass successfully.

That's good to know. This tells me that Cabelas is "shopping around" for manufacturers to fill their boxes.
So far I've seen Cabelas use Ulyanovsk of Russia, P.T. Pindad of Indonesia (.380 Auto), Prvi Partizan of Serbia and now Fiocchi of Italy (if it's stamped G.F.L. Or from MO if it's stamped FIOCCHI USA).

OK , I stand partially corrected. Fiocchi ammo , American or Italian made , is top notch. But the only 'new' Herter's packaged ammo I saw so far was 9mm , 40 S&W and 7.62x39 , all of which was in lacquered steel cases with Cyrillic letters. Definately NOT made in the USA!

Cabelas is making it hard to keep track of their Herters brand ammo. You literally have to have a score card to keep track of who's currently making what ammo.
Cabelas has two styles of Herters ammo. The standard yellow box and now a black "Select Grade" line.
Last time I checked (Dec '10) the yellow box line of ammo had the Polyformance coated steel cased ammo made by Ulyanovsk of Russia (factory symbol is a double-arrow design that forms a circle or oval). Now mkk41 is telling us he's seeing cirillic lettering on the cases (my guess it's possibly "Б********з" for Barnaul Cartridge Factory). Also found in the yellow box line in .380 Auto only was brass cased ammo made by PT.PINDAD of Indonesia (case stamped with PT. PIN). This .380 ammo was the only anomaly amongst the yellow boxed Herters that uses steel cases in all calibers.
Now Cabelas has introduced their black box Herters "Select Grade" that uses brass cases in all calibers that they offer. In Feb when I went to the Reno, NV. Cabelas store and checked this ammo in 9mm and .357 Mag, it was stamped with "nny", which is Prvi Partizan of Uzice, Serbia. Now it appears that Fiocchi of Italy is supplying the ammo. If the cases are stamped with G.F.L. And the boxes say made in the USA (MO), this tells me that at least the cases are being imported to the MO plant to be loaded here and packaged for Cabelas Herters Select Grade line of ammo. When they run low on the Fiocchi ammo, who knows who'll they "job-out" the next contract to.

The Fiocchi ammo I've seen comes from two countries. The ammo in dark blue boxes is made in Missouri. Any other color is made in Italy.
