Default Twist on Remington 700ADL, .223 caliber.

I bought a used Remington 700ADL in .223 caliber. Would anyone know the twist on this rifle?

Thanks in advance,
Rafter-S

You can go to the Remington website and look up the 700 series rifles, find the one that matches your gun the closest and click on specifications to find out what the current twist rate is.

You can also take a cleaning rod and put on a tight patch or brush. Insert it in the barrel and mark where it starts (at the muzzle or chamber) and one side. let the rod turn while pushing it in the barrel and when its done one rotation make the second mark. The distance between the 2 marks is your twist rate. example if the distance between the 2 marks is 12 inches the twist rate is 1 in 12.

All Remington 700, Seven, 600, 660, and XP-100's in .223 are a 1 in 12 twist with the exception of the most recent "Tactical" models (i.e. XCR Tactical, SPS Tactical, etc.) which are 1 in 9. Obviously, there might some Custom Shop guns out there as well that are non-standard twist rates.

It's very probably 1 in 12".

Try Steve's advice to know for sure.

If it is a 1 in 12, then what weight bullets will work best for accuracy?

1 in 12" twist. bullets lighter than 62gr.
It will shine with Sierra 52gr. SMKs.
The lighter V-Max bullets will work as well.

The PSS and LTR tactical rifles are 1 in 9" twist and work well with the 69gr. SMKs. Black Hills makes a nice 69 grain load for those that do not reload.

My Hart barrelled 22Br is twisted 1-8" and works real well with 69-75 gr. SMKs.

I've got a 26 inch 1-9 Shilen barrel that does quite well (1/2 MOA) with Hornadays 75 gr HPBT. Never tried the A-Max.
