FBI / Secret Service Load
Hi:
Is the .38spl 158gr LSWC-HP Plus P ammo still available?
Any source have this ammo in stock?

Don't know about "in stock" but Federal
still produces their version. I bought half a case a year or so ago from ammoman.com.

I don't think that the Secret Service ever carried the FBI load. The Secret Service used to carry the 110 gr. +P+ JHP. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

FBI, St Louis, Chicago load is all the same; 158 grain LSWCHP+P. Made by Winchester and Federal, probably Remington as well, but I never used Remington. The best IMO was the Federal Nyclad load; very soft lead with a blue nylon coating. Federal still makes the standard (non-Nyclad)load in their Classic line.

Cor Bon/Glaser makes the most brutal stuff these days. Have you checked out the DPX or PowR' Ball line in .38 special? After checking them out I carry it in .45 acp & .38 special. YouTube - CORŽBON DPX Product Demonstration Video

The "FBI load" is made by all of the "big three".
The Remington is usually considered the softest, so is most often recommended for a 2". Out of a three inch or longer barrel, any of the big three.
What I run in my carry J, and what is in my Wife's bedside 4" Model 66...

CAUTION: The modern Remington version will not chamber in some 1970's era S&W revolvers, due to elongated bullet nose. See round pictured second from right below. Far right is .357 mag, other rounds on left are Federal, Winchester and earlier Remington (not necessarily in that order). This has been discussed on the forum previously.

Stiab, that is very informative. Simply to amplify on your point, the Remington R38S12 load (which I believe is still their current product) fits easily in my S&W 637 snubby bought eight years ago.

flop-shank, you are correct. The FBI used the 158 LHP while the Secret Service (and ATF) used the 110+P+ JHP.

I have had this issue in my older J frame with one box of Remingtons
I recently bought. The next box, they were back to seating the bullet
deeper. Glad they fixed it.
