Default Ammo

I've owned bolt .308 and just shot factory ammo, now have a S&W 10 and the barrel is marked .308.
Question is whether .308/7.62 has the same compatibility issue as .223/5.56? I know mil spec will shoot both but not the other way around sometimes. Wondering why the barrel is not marked with both.
Also, is linked ( mg ) ammo ok or is it a little hotter than standard?
Thanks for any help

No. In this case 308 is hotter load then 7.62Nato. You can use either

At today's prices for .308, you really ought to be reloading.

When I hand my son a 20-round mag of .308, I don't want to be thinking "Hey, that's $35.00 there!"

Ouch.

Thanks for the replies. I found some mil surp 147gr linked for .56 ea for 200. Great price but needs cleanup. I have the dies but haven't shot enough yet to build up brass.

One thing you need to be aware of is that a lot of the Milsurp ammo floating round is Berdan Primed. If you are planning on reloading you'll want to make sure you peek into every lot of your milsurp ammo to determine if it's Berdan or Boxer primed. Because Berdan primed cases incorporate the anvil and feature 2 flash holes the ONLY way to de-cap a Berdan primed case is hydraulically. A wet messy chore. If you can't find and Berdan primers you may as well save the effort of de-capping it and consider just throwing them away.

Now, what's a real huge PITA about this Berdan primed brass is that if you miss just one case in your sort it's very likely you'll be looking at a bent or broken de-capping pin. Because of this any once fired range brass that I may locate gets sorted a total of 3 times to try and make sure one of these infernal Berdan cases doesn't slip through.

Now, concerning fitup of 7.62 in a 308 chamber. My experience with range brass indicates that about 50% of the 7.62 fired cases were fired in a rifle with a chamber that is just a hint deeper than a 308. Meaning that the tapered shoulder in the fired 7.62 cases is just a bit further from the case head than what I typically seen in 308 cases. As a result a full length sizing can sometimes require being run though the sizing operation using 2 setups, one being "short" and the other full length. If this isn't done I've buckled the shoulders on a few cases and it took a LOT of effort to close the press. Point is that you may find that 7.62 ammo to produce a very heavy bolt in a bolt action rifle and it may keep the bolt on a semi from locking up completely. I would recommend that you purchase a 308 case gage and check a large sample of your 7.62 ammo to insure it gages properly for 308. Most likely it will but it never hurts to play in a bit safe at the pressures these rifles operate at.

U.S. military 7.62 ammo is the same linked or not. Beyond that, all bets are off.

At Cabelas this afternoon, there is no 22 nor 9mm, lots of boxes with hundreds of rounds, clearly ammo companies had produced as much as they and you can buy 500 round box 5.56 for roughly $260. Several European brands (rarely seen in the USA) also joined the frenzy to supply ammo!

IT is really crazy, I wonder how many rounds of ammo the whole country has now (these belong to private gun owners), 8 billion, 10 billion? I have to wonder if Cuomo won the democratic primary in 2016? all firearm shops would be vacuum cleaned in 24h, even the slowly moving bird-shot will be gone.

Yamamoto once said Japan could never invade the U.S. because there is a rifle behind every blade of grass. Now apparently a rifle and 1000 plus rounds!

Never tried the Magtech match 308 ammo but my son is shooting the Federal 308 match ammo and he likes it a lot! He bought them for $22.49/box, that's $1.12/round. Federal is using a 168gr Sierra Match King bullet.

I would never spend that much for loaded ammo but not everyone reloads like we do.

At current prices I can load a 168gr 30-06 Match round using a Hornady bullet for 51 cents a round and using a Sierra bullets for 55 cents a round. Remember, I said at current component prices. I have loaded them as low as 28 cents a round.
