Default Hirtenberger Ammo - Anyone know anything about this manufacturer?

I just bought 6 boxes of 50 - M1 Carbine for $15 per box from an antiques store in Flagstaff. Made in Austria in an orange and white box. Just thought I would ask. They look fine, no green - can see from wear on the casings they have rattled and rubbed together for some number of years.

Thanks

Default Austrian Manufacturer

Hi,

Hirtenberger is an austrian manufacturer, but no longer in business. They were taken over by a multinational RUAG Ammotec in Switzerland. They produced ammo since I don't know when, motly high quality, but I remember my Colt Combat Gov't from 1986 didn't like their Hardballs. My S&W M27-3 really likes their .38 Special 148gr WC and produces groups under 1,5" at 25 meters (I still have about 1400 rounds, then the supply i finished) - their brass is excellent for reloading, the strongest cases I ever had....

best regards
Ulrich

Default Hirtenberger ammo

Their rifle is normally warm/hot. Shoots well in HK 91/PTR rifles.

Good luck

I heve never seen anything but extremely high quality bearing their name.
The sniper ammo purchased by the Brits during the Gulf War was loaded by them. Those boys can shoot!

Hirt surplus .308 is the only 147 grain military FMJ that shoots well in my Ruger 77VT. It shoots so well that I won't shoot any of it from anything else now.
Too bad I found out it shoots that well in the Ruger after shooting up most of what I had in an M1A.

I still have quite a bit of the 100gr truncated soft point 9mm
police ammo. It was imported by a police supply company in
Indiana for the FBI ammo tests when they were contemplating
a 9mm service round. It was passed over because it over penetrated. It also expanded to over .045, penetrated auto
glass set at a 30 degree angle with minimal dispersion, left the
muzzle at about 1,400 fps. It is a marked +P+ round and will
batter most semiautomatic pistols to death with continued use.
They are intended for use in Glock 9mm autos, and shoot flat
to 100yds in my Glock model 34.

1442 fps 10 shot average from a 5" Ser70 GM. It would also feed in a postwar P-38, but shooting more than a few rounds seemed unwise to me. I would use with caution in any aluminum frame auto.

I always thought it was for use in a SMG, like an H&K MP5.

Nope, I am referencing the 100gr Truncated Soft Tip, Police
ammo, they did import 124gr fmj that was intended for smg
it will beat a standard 9mm to death rather quickly. I will
take a pic of the ammo and post tomorrow, if I can navigate
the site procedures for pic posting.

There was a bunch of this on GunBroker a few years back. It was for MP5s and Uzis. Super super hot rounds. Way above +P+.

I have some 9mm Hirtenberger ammo with a black tip. I bought it with a S&W 76 sub-gun, it is NOTICEABLY hotter than any other 9mm round I've ever fired in a machine gun.

I've never seen any 9mm Hirt with a black bullet tip. I believe what you may have is Israel Military Industries 115FMJ carbine ammo.

The British call the 124gr +P the L7A1 for smg's. I tried to load pics of the Police 100gr to no avail, doing something wrong.

I have used Hirtenberger is my 7.62 Israeli Mauser. It is BEAUTIFUL stuff; accurate, clean shooting, reloadable brass, very high quality stuff.

I've got nearly 1000 rounds of .308 150 grain soft points, by Hirtenberger. It's very good ammo, accurate and has accounted for several deer for me and my sons.

Yes, it is hot w/a pronounced report, but I have never seen signs of over pressure, like flattened primers or backed out primers.
Hirtenberger must custom make their powder for this round.

My father-in-law gave me some of the 100 grn 9mm +p+ a year ago. He picked it up cheap a few years back and no longer shoots a 9mm. Anyway, I ran it through a Glock G17 and I didn't notice much. It was a little snappy, but not much more. Shot pretty well. Saved the brass.

Last weekend I picked up two boxes of this stuff at the flea market for $11@. Next time I go to the range I'll chrono some.
