Good stuff, that is my preferred factory FBI load.

I don't use a lot of it, but it is so hard to come by, that I check for it from time to time. I thought someone here might like to have a box or two for hard times.

Thanks for the heads-up. I too prefer the Remington offering over the Winchester or Federal stuff.

I always read comparisons of the Rem and Win loads, but no one ever mentions the Federal version. Any issues with that? I found a full box of it that I forgot I had. It is recent mfg, but they've stopped listing it in their catalog.

The issue seems to hinge on how soft the lead is -- Remington always comes out on top. What about Federal...?

I think the Federal "FBI Load" is the most accurate but the lead is a little too hard for use in a short barrel revolver IMO. (as is the Winchester ammo) If you are using the Federal ammo in a 4" barrel revolver it will work very well. I have 4 boxes of Federal I use in my 4" Model 10 and keep the Remington ammo for my 2" M36 and M642.

When I shot the Federal (38G New box) FBI load into a bunch of water filled milk jugs from a 2" Model 36, it did not open up. It penetrated 5 jugs and was lying on the ground behind them. The Remington I have shot will open up from a snub. I have never tried the Federal from a 4" gun, but I would think it would open up some. I also think that Federal switched component bullets for this load because some of the older stuff was softer and shaped a little differently.

Default FBI Load

A friend of mine just recently got back from a trip out west. He picked me up 7 boxes of the Federal SWHP +P ammo from a gunshop in Idaho for $17 per box. Should have had him pick up all they had for that price.

I picked up a box of these today at my local BassPro for $31.99. They had several boxes, but I only grabbed one.

In the scheme of things $31.99 isn't such a bad price for that ammo. Too bad that's true because IMO any lead .38 Special ammo shouldn't cost us more than $7/50...

In the scheme of "thongs"?!?!?

That would be a good scheme to be in!

Default .38 Spc. 158gr. LSWCHP +P

I think the best (current) load is the Buffalo Bore version of this round. The lead is soft enough to require a gas check and someone else on another site chrono'd it at 1017fps out of a 1 7/8" snubbie. I have the other manufacturers versions, but I now carry BB's load.

I have some of the Remington flavor, and out of my old Colt Official Police 4", they will not shoot through a 2 liter soft drink bottle lengthwise.

Out of any thing else I tried, including a couple of 6" .357 mags, they would. I know the old Colts usually had a tight bore, and they had a tighter twist, but this was some what surprising.

Some day I should really chronograph them to see what they are doing out of the various guns.

Shame they don't make those old Colts any more. Its also a shame that it just doesn't quite fit my hands as well as a couple of other brands do.

I chrono'd some through my 4in M15 and they went about 960fps. I got a notice from Natchez, they have them in stock, too. I'd say there has been a large run made.
