Default 45+p

Came across a few boxes of these. How does an alloy framed S&W hold up to these?

I wouldn’t subject an aluminum frame gun to a steady diet of these. In a .45 it’s really not necessary. I had an Olympic Arms M4 in .45 ACP and ran +P ammo through…it was superbly accurate but accelerated the wear on it. As I said…when it comes to .45 it’s really not necessary.

I don't think a box of the stuff is gonna hurt. I've run a bit over 1000 rounds through my shield 45 with probably 150 or so of them being +p and I haven't noticed any excessive wear on it. Wouldn't run primarily +p ammo, but in moderation, it should be fine.

As long as the alloy framed S&W you're referring to is rated for +P, it will be fine. Otherwise, save it and use it as an excuse to purchase a new .45 Auto Pistol of your choice that is rated for +P.

45ACP +P is just fine in alloy framed autoloaders. Years ago when I carried the P220 the issue ammunition was the Federal 45ACP +P HydraShok. Over the years we ran through probably hundreds of thousands of rounds of this ammunition. My pistol had many thousands of rounds fired my me

The day I had to shoot through the windshield of my Dodge K-Car, I was VERY Happy to be carrying +P ammunition.

Not only did the first round shatter the windshield, it even went on to impact it's intended target with significant incapacitating force.

I have no problem with whatever increased wear and tear that ammunition had on my sidearm because it did what it was intended to do Save Lives

I currently carry the +P Winchester Ranger

Those will not hurt your S&W .45 ACP.

No Doubt and thanks for sharing!

As to the Original Post... Those loads are only about 70-80fps hotter than the typical 230 grain 830-850FPS loads pushed to a realistic 925fps muzzle speed... They will NOT hurt an Aluminum Alloy "N-Framed" Smith Revolver... Now a Boutique Manufactured 255gr Keith Pill rated in the warm and comfy .45Super is another story... but these nice Winchester Ranger +P's, not a problem, ever.

In 45 ACP it’s really not necessary.

They’d be used in my 457. At $30 a box it was too good to pass up

Winchester is a SAAMI compliant company so any ammo they sell.will not hurt any gun that is in good operating condition. No Winchester ammo I know of have been known to be extremely hot like some of the boutique ammo companies produce.

While I am a big fan of +P ammo in .38 Spl caliber and used it for SD when I carried a M60 for many years, I don't use +P in most other calibers - especially 45acp. The reason is I don't carry a 1911 or other 45 acp for SD and so I just don't need it. While +P ammo will not blow up a gun in good operating condition, the more powerful the load is, the faster wear will be accelerated, the greater the recoil, the louder the report and usually you will get more muzzle blast.

In the case of a 45 acp for SD, the 45 acp 230 grain FMJ has a very good track record for a non +P, non expanding bullet. IMHO, a FMJ bullet will feed better than ay other configuration and therefore would be the most reliable. That is just my two cents....... YMMV.
