What has happened to 158gr .38spl. ammo? I Can't find any.

Try the Internet. In the last month, I've ordered 500 rounds from Midway. All 158 grain.

A quick google search will find all the 158gn Round Nose Lead you want...good for the rane and accumulating brass, but not the best choice for SD.
By the way, I'm the guy from the linked post.

I've always had trouble finding carry ammo locally. I bought my last .38 Special +P 158 gr LSWCHP Remingtons from Cheaper Than Dirt.
