What are people doing with buckshot?

I bought a good bit of 12 ga. slugs and buckshot from Natchez (I think) about twenty years. It was on sale at a good price, but that's really a poor reason to buy something you'll probably not use. Fired a few rounds of each as I recall; heavy kick and not fun to shoot. Put it on my table at a gun show and priced it cheap to get rid of it - didn't sell even one pack of five rounds. I can't see the sudden interest in buckshot. We're not going to see front yard warfare, but apparently some are anticipating it.

What makes you think front yard warfare is not coming to residents in certain places?

No one knows for sure yet, but I can tell you the riots, arson, assaults, and looting we have seen so far are nothing compared to what is coming between now and April or May, at least. Expect a major ramp-up beginning the day after election day, especially if Trump happens to be a clear winner and the Dems take it in the shorts in the Congressional elections.

I do not think we will know who the actual winners are until well into February, creating a major Constitutional crisis.

Holy cow!!! I was looking for some extra rounds of Federal LE Tactical #1 Buck (discontinued) and found a guy on GB selling 50 rounds for $150 and I thought that was crazy. Sounds like a screaming deal compared to Midway.

A bit before Y2K a local guy was going out of business and I bought an unknown (lost my receipt) amount of Federal rifled slugs from him and Remington #4 buckshot. #4 buck is good stuff. Close to 2 cases, whatever that is. I kept it behind my bedroom door until my bride complained and I put it under the bed.
During the past 4 months, self defense shotguns (extended tubes or large capacity mags) flew off the shelf. Shells were bought up. Then there were none.
I set up at a very small show 2 weeks ago and took close to 60 boxes of #4 buck and rifled slugs with me. The first 2 hours I sold half of it at a buck a shell. During the small lull I re-priced it at $8 per 5 shells. Sold out by 3pm. No haggling or complaining.


I have noticed that overall, whether it is ammo or guns or reloading components, money is really no object anymore. I don't know if it is the threat of unrest, extra money from the unemployment checks or what. I see a pinned Model 66 go for $1,200 and primers go for 10 cents apiece and scratch my head (and wish I had several of each).

Nothing says "PLEASE GO SOMEWHERE ELSE" quite like the muzzle of a shotgun in close proximity to the face. Just about any peaceful protester should be able to understand the message without much explanation.

Just like any other deer after hanging and aging for a few days. The proteins start breaking down and lot of liquid is drained from the carcass. Plus being cold it's a lot easier to cut up and process.

I was once at a place that sold milsurp stuff to foreign governments. I spent 4 dollars a round to shoot a Lahti 20 mm cannon. !0 of 'em OH YEAH. I was at the local Walmart the other day. Bought two boxes of Remington 2-3/4” 00 buck. 15 rounds a box for $14 and change (per box). They seemed to have plenty of both 2-3/4” and 3”.

They have #8 game loads and turkey loads. Out of stock om everything else.

I bought 2 cases of PMC #4 Buck in April, price was $139 a case (250 round case). That and the 50 rounds of slugs I had should hold me for a while.

I tested the PMC and a few boxes of Rio Buck that a store here had.
I would not recommend the Rio unless the target is really close.
I was barely keeping all the pellets on the target at 7 yards. That Rio spreads fast.

The PMC did much better. Smaller size Buckshot seems to like a bit of choke, my Modified patterns shot tighter than the targets shot with the Skeet #1 choke.

The best choke I have found so far for guns with screw chokes has been light modified. 11-87 and a 391 Beretta shoot them great. The premium buck with the buffering in them mostly shoot great. I have some older Winchester compression formed buffered 00 Buck that shoots (mostly) all pellets on a silhouette target at 40 yds with light mod choke...but I am down to about 4 packs of 5 left

I have two- 25 round boxes each of 00B and #4B plus maybe 20 rounds of 12 ga slugs which have been on my shelf for a couple of decades. I also have around 100 rounds of Remington and Federal lead-free 00B I was testing for the USAF back in the mid -2000s. Combined, that should be enough for any unanticipated front yard shootouts with Antifa. BTW, I also have a 5# bag of 00 pellets in case I need to load my own.

Oh no...just about 20 rounds of that Winchester left. I have at least 250 rounds of Rem 4 buck and probably 250 rounds of other 12 ga buck...and it surely isn't hard to load up a bunch of buck shot loads...32cal round balls or larger if necessary and some nice Federal cases and wads of course. I can do about 75 an hour. Just cause I'm from Wy doesn't mean we don't have some bad guys here too... 6 ounces of lead balls and a couple ounces of Black FFg in a small black powder cannon works well for SHTF. Heck I have a friend with a black powder bowling ball mortar. Every body is armed here good and bad guys. I do hope it doesn't come to the necessity of needing such things though. Then I'd have to make them.

I doubt any BG would know the difference. The idea is that lower recoil makes the gun more controllable, but the terminal effectiveness remains adequate. Some 2-3/4" 00 light loads use 8 pellets instead of nine.

With 00 the standard loading has a reputation for over penetrating. So the low recoil loads giving up a couple hundred feet per second should be fine. I bought several boxes of the Federal 00 low recoil ammo a couple of years ago on that basis.

I have a pump shotgun. If you are going to be shooting it through a semi-auto make sure it cycles the action before you buy a bunch of it. If it is Federal be aware that the wad they use produces very tight groups, almost like a slug at what I would consider self defense distances. I like that but some people want a load that spreads out more.

Rio #4 is good stuff for the Shockwave. Testing led me to Modified as the do-all choke on my 20" barrel security shotgun.

I bought 5 boxes of 00 buck a couple of years ago but since it has gotten expensive I've been buying BB loads at $9 for a box of 25. I picked up 3 boxes last week but don't plan on buying anymore. I figure handgun and .223 ammo a little more important as if we don't need it for the revolution we can always use it for barter.

I would tend toward #4B, as I like the tradeoff that provides more pellets, even if they are a little smaller diameter. At close range (inside 15 yards), pellet size makes little difference. Even #2 or #4 birdshot will be adequate up close.

When I bought the Mossberg 590 here I picked up two of the old style steel ammo cans with 350 rounds of Federal 00 buckshot and a bit after Ferguson died down I picked up another 300. Other than 100 given to a cousin who is more a brother with us growing up together we have all but 100 shots between us checking out how the shotgun worked for us. Wendy just said that one is yours. She can handle the recoil but with shorter arms she is wary of short stroking the pump.

Barter!!?? Don't count on it. If you indicate you have ammo for barter in a SHTF situation, you'll be lucky if they just hold you up for the ammo and not kill you.

A few random thoughts: 1. During the '12-'13 "ammo crunch," there was no shortage of 12ga business ammo: buck and slugs, while everything else was not available.

2. As to Rio shotgun ammo, it leaves a plastic residue in the bore that is the devil to clean out. At minimum. a 20ga bore brush with Scotch Brite reusable wipes material wrapped around the bristles. Poster 2152hq was VERY helpful to me on this issue.

3. The best time to buy ammo is any time except during a crunch. As other posters have indicated in the past, they buy 1 or 2 5-packs of buck @ $4-$5 each when they're shopping for other items. No sweat to put together 50-60 rounds in this manner.

4. Please, never boast about, or even mention in passing, what you have re firearms/ammunition. No good can come of it and it may even prove dangerous. And you are not responsible to provide ammo (or guns!) to neighbors, etc. should things go south.

The local sporting goods store has high brass long range game loads in larger pellets sizes - 4, 5, and even BB. Last time I looked it wasn't much more expensive than the standard. If you can't find buckshot.. expand your horizons.

I guess that I am a little late to the party. I haven't contemplated stocking up on more buckshot than I already have. However, a few comments here opened my eyes, particularly when it came to price.

I have a couple questions for those that roll their own buckshot. Talking 12 gauge, do you have to use high brass, or would low brass from expended trap loads work? Also, do you need to use fiber wads, or might you use the plastic wads associated with trap loads?

Any shell body will be OK. Just load them as you would using smaller shot sizes, except you will generally need to hand-stack the pellets. Some reloading manuals provide separate recipes for Buckshot loads. Long ago I made up a number of 12 gauge 00 buckshot loads in paper cases just for fun, I probably still have a box of them around somewhere. I think I used just ordinary plastic wads. Fiber wads would probably be better if you could find any. Doubt they are still on the market.

I don't have any high brass shells. I use the same shells, wad and powder charge that I use for small shot. I use a turret press and do everything including placing the wad. I place the buckshot by hand then use the press to crimp.
I have posted this before that when I was younger and wanted a few shells with larger shot I would open up a shell and dump the shot, fill up with BBs and push the crimp back down by hand. I tried this last week with some Hornady OO that I bought several years ago and seemed to work ok. Larry

Buck isn't hard to load. I used to load all my duck and goose loads in Win AA cases. Mostly didn't need 3 inch either. I loaded buckjshot loads in Straight walled Federal cases. Just more room. Just had to stack the buck in the shells so you could get the right load in. I even had some buffered buck loads. I also loaded other than buck.. I loaded a LOT of Lead T shot. Had about 50 of them in the shell. 22 cal round balls. I still have about 3 lbs of it in the loading room. Found it Friday looking for stuff and what was left of a 5 lb bag of #2s. Inside of 50 yds you don't want to get hit with a load of lead 2s. The old Hercules manuals had some buck shot loads as did the Lyman manual..slugs too...but not worth loading them in my opinion. Ask me how I know!
