Default Federal 9BP Ammo

This their 9mm 115 gr. HiShok JHP. Have any of you found any of this at Walmart? Ours sometimes has the Federal 115 gr. FMJ practice stuff but never this.

I never expect Walmart to have anything other than practice ammo for handguns and hunting ammo for long guns.

Ammunition To Go has had the 9BP listed recently at a good price. I've always like the 9BP--feeds well and it's very accurate.

Good load, with a great track record, on expansion.

I have a bunch of Illinois SP +P+ around, but still carry the 9BP in my light weight Kahr P9. It kicks enough with standard pressure.

It's very old-school and pretty much has to be sought-out: I've never seen it at Wal-Mart.

Erich,

Way back when, Wally World did carry Federal 9BP along with my favorite .357 Magnum load, the WW 145 STHP. Having said that, while the 9BP is OK, there are lots of better choices out there today.

Wow. Then again, I remember Glocks at Wal-Mart in '88, so I should qualify my answer with "within the last 15 years."

I've not seen the 9BP but I've seen the R-P 115gr JHP, 147 WWB JHP, and the new 124+P PDX-1s at WalMart recently.

Yes the 9BP is a little long in the tooth but is still a fairly efficient round when you can find it. In my experience it has been very accurate and as earlier said has a feed friendly bullet profile. Prior to the introduction of +p/+p+ ammo it was considered as one of the best standard pressure rounds in 9mm.

I agree with that - I really love the 9BP.

In an early '90's gun magazine , Mas Ayoob tells of a coroner who was examining the body of a deceased who had been shot with the 9BP and indicated that the man looked had been shot with a rotor rooter and that he'd never seen a wound channel such as the one he was examining. That's a pretty concise view of an "old" technology ammo could do. I feel sure it's the same today as then.

I also noticed PDX1 at Wallyworld in 9MM and .40 S&W.

Yep, that's it. Depending upon the packaging, it's coded as either 9BP (50 round boxes) or C9BP in the Classic line, usually in 20 round boxes. The 9BPLE is a +P+ round using the same bullet, so penetration suffers.

As it happens, I ran relatively recent 9BP in expansion tests earlier this month. Expansion was 64 caliber @ 15 feet without clothing. Clothing wouldn't change (in my experience) the expansion, it would increase the penetration by delaying it.

There might be newer designs out there, but it works. Remember, firearms were killing things for 400 or so years without expanding bullets.

I think my box of 9BP(and others) pre-date the silver boxed 9BP. These boxes are about 20 years old.
