Default steel shot and rifled slugs in Fixed MOD choke

Bought a new Mossberg 500 at Big-5 Sporting goods, it has a fixed Modified choke, 28” vent rib barrel. In my area can only use steel shot on upland game. I called Mossberg and asked if I can shoot steel and rifled slugs in the fixed MOD choke, they said no?

Does that sound right?

"J": It belongs to you now not them. That is their 'lawyer' answer not their practical answer. Of course you can shoot steel shot and slugs. One heck of a lot of slug shots might, but only might open the choke slightly. Big deal! Model 500 replacement barrels are relatively cheap. The slugs are the only issue, so why not buy a dedicated barrel for slugs with a rifle front sight already mounted? Then you are ready for deer hunting or duck hunting by just switching barrels. .... Kinda what I was thinking, thier standard mumbo jumbo. Will be looked at slug barrels this weekend at the gun show.

Any recommedations: Smothbore, or fully rifled? May only get the chance to go but once year in an attempt to fill a tag.

As for a smooth bore or fully rifled, get the rifled. With not only slugs but especially sabots, you'll get better accuracy.

I agree with glg above. If your potential shots with a slug gun are going to be over 100 yards, definitely go with the rifled barrel. IF your shots are going to be less than 100 yards then another consideration that is important to me comes into play; most smooth bore slug barrels are well within "minute of angle of deer" with a favored brand of slug ammo at ranges less than 100 yards, AND the short smooth bore barrel can be left on the shotgun for a very good home defense weapon. So, take a look at your hunting area and the choice will follow. ........... Big Cholla

I should add to my comment; either slug barrel will come with a rifle type front sight. To get maximum accuracy from your selected barrel, you will need to add a rear sight. Williams makes a nice adjustable rear peep sight that can be used as 'ghost ring' or with a peep aperture. This rear sight is easily installed and/or removed when wing shooting. ....... Big Cholla

Let's hang on a minute before we dismiss the manufacturer's advice.
1. Current Mossberg production has screw-in chokes rated for steel shot. How new is this fixed choke barrel?
2. Mossberg fixed choke barrels from earlier production are NOT rated for steel shot and steel shot WILL damage them.
3. The pure lead Forster-style slugs will not harm any barrel, but are usually inaccurate from tight chokes.
4. The sabot-style slugs require a rifled barrel to provide the spin and are pointless in smoothbores.

If you have indeed bought some "new-old stock" it is important to be certain exactly what you bought.

Purchased new in Nov 2009, combo deal new in the box with the 18 /12 security barrel from Big-5 sporting goods.

OK, Foster type slugs are sized to go through any choke, "common knowledge" to the contrary. The better accuracy is usually from improved cylinder, but that may vary. The only way you'll find out is to try it. The lead won't hurt the choke.

Steel shot is another matter. If the barrel steel is too soft, it'll batter the choke out of it over a period of time, possibly scar the bore.

BTW, when you buy a gun doesn't matter, it's when the gun was made. I've bought new guns that I've later identified as being 7 years old by the manufacturers coding. It's also not unusual for manufacturers to use up an oversupply of older parts on new production, especially if they're shipping to low cost contract buyers.

From Mossbergs website FAQ:
Can I shoot steel shot through all barrels ?
No, not all barrels. Barrels with an interchangeable Accu-Choke™ or Accu-Mag™ choke tube system, yes (with proper tubes installed.) However, steel shot is not recommended for older "C-Lect Choke®" or fixed-choke barrels.

They don't define 'older' when refering to the fixed choke barrels, but I don't think they currently sell anything other than a CYL bore in a fixed choke.

Your modified barrel will shoot Foster or Brenneke slugs perfectly safely, but whether it shoots them with acceptable accuracy remains to be seen and the only way to do it is try it.

As for steel, modified choke is fine, and also look at the other "non toxic" loads too, even though they are more expensive they are alternatives.

Steel shot will probably ring the barrel just behind the choke. Supposedly this is just cosmetic and not dangerous, but I wouldn't subject one of my barrels to this kind of treatment.

Spare barrels for that shotty are readily available and cheap, get one made for steel shot.
