Default Please educate this newbie on 342PD ammo

I've just purchased a pre-owned 342PD. ".38 s&w spl" is marked on it. Does this mean that I should not use +p ammo with this gun?

Also, Please share your thoughts re: best defensive ammo...perhaps one that has relative low recoil.

It is probably OK to use +P, but check w/S&W to be sure (only practice with non +P). The best non +P for self defense and reduced recoil (IMO) is the Federal Nyclad 125 grain.
