Super Vel Ammo in 44 Mag
I was given 2- 20 round boxes of Super Vel ammo in 44 Mag. their 180grn. JHP I had heard of guns going BOOM and not the good type either but guns actually Blowing Apart. Their packed in the original boxes and the Headstamps are super-vel Are these rounds ok to shoot in a S&W 629-2 thats been Ported by the Performance center along with internal work like a 3 1/4 lb Trigger etc. I'd hate to ruin this fine gun but after all I've heard back in the 70's on how Powerful they were my curiosity is telling me to try even 1. Should it be safe or is it better to keep as a Nostalgic item of its time

A lot of misinformation abounds on the net regarding Super Vel ammo. It won't hurt your gun as long as it's in good mechanical condition.
The 29/629 will hold far more pressure than any factory loaded ammo has ever been loaded to. It just isn't able to do it day in and day out like a Redhawk will, without loosening up. You may want to hang onto that stuff though. It is becoming quite collectable these days. |
Its now cult ammo. Don't burn it recklessly, its too valuable. Along with Black Talons, Super Vel ammo is collected by a range of perverts (me included.) If you wish, put it on restricted duty. Load your home defense M29 with it. If some idiot enters your abode uninvited, use it on him. I don't care if its approaching 40 years old or not.
Its American made commercial quality. It lasts forever, or well beyond our life span. Back in the day, it was high performance stuff. I could never tell any difference in accuracy between it and the other, cheaper brands. We used to love it. Over the last 2 or 3 years its been coming out of closets and ammo boxes. I buy it when I see it. At least if its reasonable. They even pioneered the ammo wallet. A nice, folding carrier with 12 rounds protected by the plastic. That in .357. Good stuff, cherish it. |

I like these posts... back in the day, sit down, you know it's gonna be a long story... I used a bunch of this in 38, 357 and 9mm, some in 380... later, a bit in 44. Lee did some Great ammo and I gave him a bunch of money. It never disapointed... he also, by way of his sucess, got the big three off dead center and they developed a bunch of "stuff"... I still see him as the foundation of self defense stuff that we see on the market today. he was a "bit" ahead of his time. neat fella.
