In my M41, Standard Velocity shoots so well that I can't even justify trying Green Tag. Off of sand bags, it will shoot 1/2" groups at 50 yards out of a 5 1/2" Clark barrel. I did pick up a box of 100 Green Tag during a "buy one box of anything for 1/2 price" sale, but haven't tried them yet. Figured I'd shoot 5 or 10 sometime this spring to verify zero and group size, then use them on the 50 yard line at a 2700 match.

You'll never know till you try it in your gun. I keep some on hand just to test every now and then, but use Federal 711B in most of my 22s'. I've even tried the Federal Gold Medal Match which is at least twice the price of 711 and can't justify the cost. I had one S&W 41 that worked best with American Eagle ammo, that's the one I should have kept!

Depends on your application. I have a High Standard that will(off a rest) shoot Green Tag slightly better than CCI-SV. Off hand, shooting bullseye pistol, there is no measurable difference. If money was no object, I'd probably shoot Green Tag, with the theory that I would MAYBE pick up a couple of points in the course of a match. Many of the bullseye shooters in my club have gone to Aguila ammo. Aguila uses Eley primer compound and delivers excellent accuracy at a great price. The best shooter in my club tested a bunch of ammo in his Pardini. Eley 10-X did perform the best off a rest, but not signifigantly. He shoots Aguila Match Pistol. He routinely shoots around 875/900 with that ammo. I'm now going to have to dog him a bit. I'll plant the seed that maybe shelling out for that 10-X will be the ticket to a solid High Master rating. Maybe the 10-X will add another 4-5 points to his score. This is a case of how much do you want to spend to get where you are going!

Excellent point! A .22 pistol that will shoot the cheap stuff well, is definitely a keeper.

My model 41 does shoot the green tag just a hair better than the standard velocity. Since my primary use for my model 41 is static steel plates, spending the extra money doesn't make much sense. Perhaps if I were a serious bullseye shooter, the extra money might be a worth while expense.

It is worth your while to try at least one box just to see how accurate you gun can be.

Good thread, I was wondering the same thing as both are loaded to a velocity of 1070.
I get significantly tighter patterns with standard velocity CCI compared to high velocity, Federal Gold Medal.

From what I've seen and heard standard vel. Cci is pretty much the norm in the bullseye shooting world, most consistent and accurate.

They seem to shoot the same from the guns I’ve tried them in. At that price I’d try some of the European ammo instead of green tag

As has been said, it really depends on the gun.

My Clark Custom 10/22 is a tack driver at 100 yards, but that's only with Green Tag.

My Ruger MKII bull barrel pistol is extremely accurate with CCI standard ("Blue tag"), more so than with Green Tag.

In late 80s Green Tag was a big deal around here. Kids were buying it to squirrel hunt because some target shooters were bragging on GT. We did extensive tests with all popular American 22 LR ammo. All makes and variations from target to hyper including bulk. We used a good cross section of 22 rifles to run the tests.
What came out of these tests is what you would expect. The run of the mill 22 rifle did do better with certain ammo. It had nothing to do with Target grade ammo. We found you needed a rifle of the quality that would benefit from premium ammo to make it reasonable to buy.
This was before ammo panics and the quality of American 22 ammo was a lot better than now. CCI standard vel is good quality ammo.

Supposedly, both CCI SV and CCI Green Tag, come off the same production line. Lots are tested for SD and grouping, and with those exceptional qualities, are sent over to Green Tag packaging, along with the premium price. Doesn't guarantee the Green Tag will shoot better, but statistically it should.

It really depends on what your particular rifle/pistol likes, but, I never found Green Tag to be THAT much better than CCI SV. You'd probably be better off getting Wolf, SK, etc.

It has been my experience that at least .22 rifles will often have a preference for specific ammo types and brands. Some rifles will produce excellent groups from even the cheap bulk pack .22s from Remington and Federal. Others won't.

Some time ago I did some fairly extensive bench rest testing using my Winchester 52B with a Unertl 10X scope, and I found that CCI SV .22 LR performed right up there with match ammo, Western Supermatch Mk III and Eley, at 50 yards and 100 yards. I have never tested Green Tag. Back many years ago when I was a competitive 50' .22 gallery bullseye shooter, I always used the CCI SV in that Model 52. I remember also that CCI SV .22 Short performed very well at 50 yards, close to being as good as the LR. The only ammo I have ever used for Olympic Rapid Fire is that same CCI SV .22 Short in my Hi Standard Olympic pistol. It was better than either Western or Eley. Way back when, only .22 Short was used for Olympic Rapid Fire, but today, they use .22 LR pistols. I still have several thousand rounds of that CCI .22 Short.

Tried 200 rounds of green tag in my Cooper JSR, CCI SV grouped much better.

Ive never really seen where Green Tag fits into the .22 ammo hierarchy. Its too expensive to be plinking ammo and it doesn't shoot nearly well enough to compete with even the lower end match offerings from Eley and Lapua. CCI SV works great for me in any anything Id use greentag for.
