Best I can remember is they each were recovered in the 3rd jug. Both of these tests were done several years ago, and I didn't keep good notes then.

I have to say I'm surprised at the lack of expansion from the Remington load, particularly as it's coming from a 4" barrel. It's usually touted as the most likely to expand from short barrels due it's soft lead construction.

Could the medium used have an impact, water vs. ballistic gelatin?

The plastic jug might be a factor. Whatever the case, the LHP+P load has a stellar street record (even out of short barrels).

Thanks for posting LOBO. I'm always interested in the results of different tests.

I chrono'd those same loads for giggles back in March.
Here's what I came up with.
Revolver- S&W model 15-3 4" barrel.
Conditions- overcast @ 35 deg.

Remington R38s12 896.4fps avg.
Federal NO38G (older red and white box) 873fps avg.

Thanks for taking the time to post your results.

I'm also a little surprised the Remington bullet didn't expand more than it did.

And these are the dreaded +p loads that shoot k-frames loose within 50 rounds and ignite j-frames into 1000 molten pieces with the first shot?

Have you looked at the BB website at their actual velocity figures for their 158 grain swchp? Their figures are corroborated by at least two members on this forum. Over 1000 fps from a two-inch barrel. I carry the BB loads in my steel j-frames.

By the way, thanks for the testing and posting of the results. I'm not denigrating your efforts, just remarking on the wimpiness of these supposed gun destroying loads.

Default Federal 38G

Lobo, here is a Federal offering in .38 special 158gr LSWCHP +P load that I tested. It was fired at 25 ft into stacked milk jugs full of water. I used my M65 with a 3"bbl. Sorry, I don't have a chrono, but can assume they run approx the same velocity as your test. The one I tested seemed to do a little better. I like the fact that it did not break-up even though they are not jacketed. I can't remember if this was two or three jugs, but more than one and less than four. Honestly, this is the load I carry when using a .38 for CCW. As we discussed in another thread, I may switch to the PDX1 someday. Hope this helps with your findings, and thanks for always posting your results. They are always very interesting.
