.32 S&W Long Substitutions? Best Small Game Load.....
Can someone list the optional ammo cartridges that can be used in a Model 39 chambered in .32 S&W Long ? Some say that .32 acp will work. What about .32 magnum ? Also, what would be the best small game ammo for this gun?

Interchangability
The .32 S&W Long headspaces on the rim and shares the rim dimensions and case and bullet diameters of the shorter .32 S&W cartridge and the longer .32 H&R Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum cartridges. The shorter .32 S&W cartridges may be fired in arms chambered for the .32 S&W Long; and the .32 S&W Long cartridges may be fired in arms chambered for the longer .32 H&R Magnum cartridge; although the longer cartridges should not fit and must not be fired in arms designed for shorter cartridges. I’ve never seen a M39 in 32 Long, but that does not mean much. To function with 32 Long it would probably have all the locking surfaces removed and possibly the recoil spring weakened. I’d be very surprised is a 32 Long round nose would fit in the magazine, little lone a 327, as it was probably set up for 32 Long wadcutters. If you want something more powerful sell it and buy something else. Sounds interesting though, who did the conversion?

I shoot 32 ACP ammo out of my model 631 J frame. I believe your revolver would me a model 30 or model 31, there is no model 39. As to your second question, 32 H&R magnum ammo is to long, the bullet will stick out the rear of the cylinder. 32 long ammo is available, I use ammo engine or ammo seek to find it.
AmmoEngine: .32 S&W Long / .32 Smith & Wesson Long, Instock For Sale Premium & Discount Ammunition, Ammo Deals
.32 S&W Long (Colt New Police) handgun ammo ammunition - AmmoSeek.com
cut and paste these into the Internet Explorer window and you can see what is available nationally.
Also we like pictures and stories.

Yes, it is a Model 30-1. sorry about that. I do have many more powerful guns. Just looking for options for this one as the S&W Long ammo is hard to find. I just got it and plan on using it for squirrels, etc.

should have no problem with finding ammo on the internet. the wadcutter rounds are light and work well with rabbits and smaller game.

The S&W model 39 is a 9mm semi automatic pistol. Assuming you are asking about a model 30 Regulation Police chambered in .32 S&W Long you should NOT USE any modern magnum ammo. Such ammo should not fit in your pistol and if it did the pressures are much higher than that for the .32 S&W Long which could result in damage to the gun or shooter.
You should use .32 S&W Long or .32 Colt New Police (NP) which is the same thing but would be a very old box of ammo. You can also safely shoot the .32 S&W which is a earlier lower pressure and shorter revolver cartridge of the same diameter that the "Long" was developed from.
A .32 ACP round designed for semi auto's will also chamber and fire in most .32 S&W revolvers but should be used only as a poor last alternative. The .32 acp was not designed for revolvers and with their higher pressure could be an issue if used in old top break revolvers but should not cause any damage in a later built model 30.

Georgia arms has 32 smith and wesson long ammo that is on the hotter side for that caliber. The sellier and bellot 32 smith and wesson long is also on the hotter side than most 32 long ammo. you can get them and Georgia Arms online.

However going back to the original question, sorta, IMHO the best small game load for you 30-1 would be a 32 S&W Long with full wadcutter bullet. Assuming by small game you are talking groundhogs and smaller. From a practicle standpoint for rabbits and such the 327 will not do anything the 32 Long with a wad cutter will not do. If you had a scoped K Frame the 327 will extend your range somewhat, but you are talking about a J-Frame.
For years I hunted groundhogs with a 3 1/2" Regulation Police in 32 Long. I spent a lot more time hunting and stalking than shooting but I did have good shots.

Thanks for the replies. I will be using it for squirrels and rabbits mainly. It will be used very little because it is near mint and I want to keep it that way. I am going to teach my wife to shoot with it before moving her up to a .38 (my Model 36-1). The low recoil will be easy for her to control since she has never shot a gun before.

Federal .32 S&W Long wadcutters work great for small game. Very accurate and very mild.
