Default CMP .22 surplus ammo

CMP is selling surplus govt contract .22, 5000 rounds @ $90 plus $24.95 shipping.

Details at odcmp.com in the e-store.

I haven't tried it, have some ordered but if you have ordered from them you know how long it takes.

CMP 22 ammo is Aguila . Cheapest is Aguila SE std velocity , more expensive is the Aguila Golden Eagle target slightly hotter . My 41 will not function on the cheaper stuff unless I put a drop of oil on the top round in the mag . Not needed with the hotter Golden Eagle . Both are accurate & probably the best case price available these days .

They still sell the Aquila but they are much more expensive.
The surplus is Remington Govt contract from 1995, 40gr LRN, 1135 fps.

Can anyone report their experience with the 1995 Remington ammo? Based on my experience with Remington's current .22 ammo, I wouldn't purchase a case, but this ammo may be OK in terms of overall reliability. Primarily concerned about misfire issues.

Regards from Colorado,

Tony'

At my LGS they are selling new production Federal .22 for $149/5000, and no shipping. $115 for a pig-in-a-poke compared to knowing what you are getting doesn't seem like much of a deal to me. FWIW.

Remington rimfire ammo has had ignition problems for as long as I can remember. It usually ranges in the 2% failure rate in my experience. That being said, I already ordered a case of the CMP stuff. For the money, I can't beat it for plinking.

My post from the CMP forum:

"When my club first started a CMP program 15 years ago, we purchased 5 cases with our original ammo order. We still have 2 cases left. It's functionality is worse than current Remington orders. It's so bad that our Hunter's Safety program has refused to use it.

I hope that it was simply a lot that wasn't stored correctly, but FYI."

I bought surplus .22 ammo from the CMP about 10 years ago. It all shot great. I believe what I got back then was white box OLIN. Can't wait till the "new" old stuff arrives.

maybe 15 years ago i got a "deal" on a 5k case of remington green box stuff with the hornets on it. its so waxy and nasty. its only good for revolvers and bolt guns cuz it james in autos after not too many rounds and i would just as soon pull the bullets and spread the powder on the lawn. still have 4k+ rounds left. its accurate enough but i would refer to shoot good CCI or federal stuff.

I shot on a military pistol team in the 1990s. Shot alot of the Remington white box. It was not reliable enough to use in a match with my Smith 41 but my Clark Ruger loved it. Of course we saved Ely Pistol Match for our big matches.

If it was anything but Remington I might give it some thought. I don't own any Remginton .22 ammo and I have no plans to add any to my inventory.

Having grand kids, I kinda hafta keep some .22s on hand, like a couple of cases. I never buy Remington rimfires and not for minute do I think they could care less that I don't buy their junk. CMP .22 ammo works just fine plinking and bringing a Grand Dad some lasting joy.

I ordered 2 cases when it came available. I don't shoot Rem 22 (I use Fed value packs) but its always good to have a large supply of 22 ammo, even if 2% missfires, its just range fodder

I had 1 dud in 500 rounds so far, it didn't have any primer material in it. Accuracy is fine but it is probably the dirtiest ammo I've ever used. Deposits a lot of lead in the barrel.

Mine has shipped and will be here in a few days. From what type of firearm have you shot your Remington ammo?

You need a 6 lb spring. That's what I did with mine and it works perfectly with the Aguila SE.

3 revolvers, a model 17, a 617 and 18. Two ruger MKIIs one 8" and one 10". The revolvers were dirtier and had more lead deposits than the semis.

Default CMP Remington 22 Ammo

I received my Remington 22 ammo on Saturday and went out and fired 60 rounds out of my 10/22. There were no problems with functioning or accuracy. At 35 yards the ten shots groups were about 5/8 inch. I'm pleased with the ammo.

I got to shoot some of the CMP surplus Remington ammo yesterday. I shot 65 rounds out of my Marvel Precision Unit 1. It functioned without flaw and there were no duds. I usually don't get this lucky.

I the 1960's and 70's I shot a lot of Remington 22 mmo without a single malfunction.
I have experienced ignition failures in teh 2 to 5% range when soem Remington ammo such as their Golden Bullet is used in semi auto pistols. The same ammo used in a revolver produces perhaps1 or 2 ignition failures out of 300 to 500 rounds. I believe it is due to the friability of the priming compound. Temington Traget SV and Remington Tnurnderbolt show much lower ignition failures in semi auto pistols than their Golden Bullet ammo.
