Default Hot ammo in 25-5

Several months ago I had a NM Ruger BH .45 and I bought some Littlestone Ammunition on GB but never shot it. It's a 240 gr JHP going 1240, according to their data. A smokin' load for sure; well-crafted, high quality, beautiful ammunition, if I can use that word.

I sold the Ruger, and now have a gorgeous nickeled 25-5. My instinct tells me I should save the hot ammo for a Blackhawk, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Is this load too much for a 25-5? I know it's an N frame, but every gun has limits. I'm leaning toward a Buffalo Bore standard pressure load of around 1000 fps behind a Gold Dot 250 gr JHP. That sounds manageable by the gun. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Others may tell you differently, but I would not shoot a hot load like that in my 25-5.

I have three Rugers, two SAAs, and one S&W chambered for 45 Colt. I used to load 'hot' loads for the Rugers only. But now I load the same for all my guns. 250g bullets at around 850 or 900 fps depending on barrel length.
I am not expecting to encounter polar bears any time soon in Indiana. Why beat the **** out of my hand with hot loads? No reason I can think of. Shoot moderate loads and enjoy yourself.
Also, I'd stick to SAAMI loads or maybe slightly higher with a S&W.

Thanks guys, you've validated my decision not to shoot it in the Smith. One of these days I'll get another BH.

Curious that (can't see your name while I'm in reply mode) commenter #2 called 900 fps hot. Or did he? I got used to thinking of 1000 fps as standard (and a standard 'minimum') for opening hollow points, but maybe that's based on bullet weight -- a 158 gr .357 probably requires a lot less pressure to launch than a 255 gr .45.

So what's 'hot' under a 255 gr bullet? Thanks for the inputs.

I wouldn't even shoot the Buffalo Bore in the Smith. I save that for my Ruger Bisley.

Wink

OK, thanks. This is like "I'm thinking of a number between..." and I haven't guessed it yet. I've been gone awhile, but I remember when this forum was a good place to find information. It seemed like there was someone with knowledge and experience behind every thread. That was before they sold the left side of the monitor, and the mood seems different now. Maybe all the experts have moved up to the penthouse. ; )

I reload for my 45s and in my 25-5 I use 8 gr. of Unique behind a 255gr. lead bullet. Plenty of power to punch paper.
