Any body here had any luck or experience shooting the .45acp shot shell in a N frame revolver? I tried them yesterday in my 1917, the cases expand and push back in the cylinder, locking the cylinder to the frame. lots of little varmints and snakes where I live and was hoping to carry these loads to take care of snake encounters, any input?

Many years ago the American Rifleman published a shot load for 45ACP using a shortened 308 Winchester case. At that time they advised against using them in revolvers because the low pressure generated by the load prevents the reseating of the fired primer after firing. That is probably what you are experiencing. Have you attempted to use then in a 1911 semi auto?

I've used the Speer brand snake loads in a 1911,and they cycled the action too. Never tried them in a revolver,but the 38's work fine too.
I have found that the shot loads seem to work best in short barrel guns. The short barrel imparts less spin to the plastic cup and gives tighter patterns. That's my theory and explanation,anyway.

there is a warning on the CCI 45 acp shotshells not to shoot them in revolvers as it results in cylinder lockup. usually there is a reason when they put warnings like that on ammo and you found it

Read instructions? that must be an Airforce thing, Instructions? Dang Gunbunnies (artillery) dont need no stinkin instructions!
Actually I was using some vintage Remington Shot Lokt, full brass, nothing about revolvers on package.

Some years back remington used to make all brass shot shells for the 45acp. I bought two boxes as we have a surplus of snakes here. On paper they gave fairly tight patterns but sometimes the ejecting shell would also cause the shell underneath it to leave the magazine. I've shot a few snakes in the head and they don't just drop dead right there. I've shot one and a hour later they are still squirming.I did chop one up with my john deere tractor. Frank

I have shot the CCI ones in .22, .38/.357, .44, and .45 ACP. I now just handload them in .38 special cases and use #8 shot over 4.7 grains of Unique. I use use the Speer shot cups. Short barrel works best.

I've killed numerous copperheads and one timber rattler with them and they work fine. Any squirming after the fact is reflexive action on the snakes part.

My preferred "prey" is the rats that hang around the barn getting fat on chicken feed and shelled corn. A water hose in a hole flushes (pun intended) them out.

For size comparison, that's a K-frame model 12 .38 posing with the rats.

I do use shot shells...just in 38 and 22....I have never bought any for the 45, but I guess that I should try some....are those solid brass ones still available?

One of the forum members and I were discussing making shot shells for 'other calibers' eg 41 magnum....I wonder how far he has gotten with his recipe...anyone heard from Jellybean lately?

C&L, yes those are the ones I was speaking about. The crimped part of the casing when ejected would show part of the rifling. My guess is that when fired naturally the crimp would expand and intrude into the rifled section of the bbl. Never fired these in a revolver, just a 1943 Ithaca 1911A1. I think remington no longer makes these. Frank
