Default chambered SD round

I'm looking for advice on how many times a chambered SD round can be loaded and unloaded. I carry in condition 1, but I unload for the range and for some dry-fire practice. At what point is the JHP round that has been chambered multiple times no longer reliable? Thanks!

I dont think there is any real empirical data as far as if you chamber x amount of times its no longer good. What happening is the bullet gets set back a little every time it gets chambered, do it a whole bunch of times it could shorten the OAL enough to significantly raise the pressure and it could have some undesired effects on the extreme side.

So how many times does it take to get there? Unless you chamber measure OAL and repeat you'd never know. I imagine it will be a variable number too. I'd say cycling 4-5 times should pretty conservative as far as safety, after that you can set them aside to practice with.
Different guns and ammo will have different results on how much setback is incurred each time it's chambered.

Only company that ever expressed an opinion to me on the subject said "we don't recommending rechambering rounds used for defense."

That's gonna depend upon caliber, brand of ammo, make of weapon and several other factors. I've seen factory suggestions of 2-4 times, but it's going to vary. As examples, there have been documented cases of primer deactivation (primer pellet fragmented, making ignition impossible) and the .40 S&W is very sensitive to bullet setback causing pressure problems.

What you need to do is inspect your round each and every time. Compare the OAL to a round that hasn't been chambered. If it's visibly shorter, discard it. You also need to look at the condition of the case rim and bullet. If the case rim looks like a puppy's been teething on it, toss it. If the bullet looks like it's been battered, toss it.

Figuring about $1 per round, is your life worth more than that?

Personnally I don't unload all that often, but when I do the chambered round goes to the bottom of the mag and I chamber a fresh one. Carry rounds get shot up at least every 90 days or so.

Unless your memory is a LOT better than mine, once in the chamber and into the practice pile it goes.

Have seen all kinds of complicated rotation schemes where the chambered round goes to the bottom of a mag or somesuch.

Keep it simple.

What is simple for me is once chambered, its range ammo.

If you can reliably keep track of some other procedure, more power to ya!

Regards,

Pat
