Shield SD Ammo

What are folks using for SD Ammo for a .40 Shield?

Thanks in advance.

I don't have a Shield but I do carry the 40c and my round of choice is the Winchester Ranger Bonded 180gr. (Q4355). They also make this in a 165gr load if you would prefer it. I've had no feeding or extraction issues and it is very accurate. Another good choice is the PDX1 ammo from Winchester. I can buy it at my local WalMart (albeit in 20 rd. boxes). Remington Golden Sabers are also a good round that I would try.

The best load for the Shield is the Speer Gold Dot 180gr Short Barrel load.

Unfortunately, it is not cheap, and comes in just 20 rd boxes. You should also look at SGAmmo.com | Family Owned and Operated, Stillwater Oklahoma for other Speer, Winchester Ranger or T-series, or Federal HST or Tactical bonded. All of those are top rounds from the best manufacturers. I chose.that particular Speer load due to barrel length, but the others will also work and are cheaper. I would go no lower than 165gr in the .40 cal.

The Federal HSTs (Hi Shock Two) have been selling for about $20 per 50 in 180, 165, and 135. Can't go wrong and they are affordable enough to verify proper functioning in your pistol.

Search the internet for best SD ammo. The #1 answer in 9mm is Cor-Bon 115gr JHP. It is +P with 1350fps and 466ft lbs energy. That is what I use for carry. Most SD ammo is in the 1000-1100fps range with 350-400ft lbs.energy. I've use that ammo in my 16 ounce LC9. It gives a very little extra flip, but not bad. I can easily get back on target fast. You want the best for SD. All Cor-Bon ammo meets SAAMI specs.

I just got my Shield 40 and have ordered Cor-Bon 40 S&W 135gr JHP with 1325fps and 526ft lbs energy. Not a lot of local gun shops stock Cor-Bon. I order it from ammunitiontogo.com. They have good prices and delivery charges are reasonable. I also us Cor-Bon SD ammo in my XD45.

I just recently purchased a 40 shield, and bought 2 boxes of Hornady Zombie 165gr. Have not fired any of them yet, so I cannot comment on it. I'm sure there are a number of brands and loads that will work well in the shield. We'll just have to keep experimenting . That will be the fun part !

My 40 is on order and I appreciate all that post. SD ammo is one topic
the other is range ammo. I plan to get a lot of time in once the Shield
comes in. I have a FS MP 40 and use the UMC 180gr. mega packs when
I practice. Any thoughts? I don't want to have to decide between practice and groceries.

In 9mm, I would try 115gr (standard pressure) Gold Dot if recoil is an issue. If not, the 124gr +P Gold Dot is another good one to try.

If you reload Nosler lists it's 135grhp in 40 cal over 12grn of blue dot. They list velocity @ 1320 fps, I chronod my XD 4" 1350fps low 1375 hi fps. Snappy but no signs of over pressure, although primer pockets loosened up after 5 reloads. I backed off to 11 grns to be safe.

I have heard many tout the M&P as glock reliable. Having said that, I have fired 2 boxes of zombie max though my glock .40 cal and 10 rounds of hornady critical defense and everything went bang bang bang. Then again, everything I have ever put in the glock goe's bang. I have Hornady critical defense in my shield .40 and I have not even fired it yet.

I have a 40 shield. As far as range ammo, I've only used PMC Bronze 165 gr. 40D. You can get it by the case for about 15.00 per box online. It cycles very well in my gun and seems accurate. As for SD. I have used Hornady Critical defense, and Winchester Ranger T-series 165 gr. both cycle well, and are very accurate. The T-series is my choice to this point but is difficult to find. Good luck

Find the ammo that is 100% reliable in your pistol and is most accurate. That is the ammo you should carry because the best ammo in the world will do you no good unless you make good hits!
