Federal Nyclad Semi-Wad. 158 gr. H.P.
Was given three boxes of these 357 Mag. (50)per new unopened condition. Anybody ever use these? Was curious about expansion, use of, value?..Thanks.

I use the .38 Special +P version. It's really the updated version of the St Louis/Chicago/FBI load of the .38 Special 158 grain lead SWC HP+P round that was the issue ammo for a lot of police departments in the late 70s-early 90s. The Nyclad coating allowed the lead to be a bit softer than the original all lead bullet, making for higher velocities without barrel leading. The .38 Special +P load has a great reputation in real-life encounters.
The .357 magnum loading should be pretty hot, theoretically a better round than the 125 grain JHP.

There is a slight collectors value associated with those boxes even though they are only from the 70's. I bought 2 boxes of the .38 Special +P ammo in the same box at a gun show last year for a good price. I'm going to shoot them instead of save them.

Yeah I have a good stash of 125 gr. Remington 357's, and may keep these as they are..Sounds like there is more 38 Special around then the 357 in the Nyclad. These are all from the same lot as well.

At one point S&W ammo offered a 158 gr. lead HP .357 round (made by Federal?). The bullets had a heavy wax coating. I have about 20 rounds remaining. Less harsh muzzle blast and recoil than other 158gr loads. With the effectiveness of the .38 LHP, I wonder why the same bullet in .357 achieved no popularity in K-frame mags. Perhaps the appearance of the 125gr JHP?
