Default Ammo price gouging.....

Three weeks ago in Florida, I saw Federal .223 going for
$400.00 for a bulk box of 1,000.

Today while setting up for a gun show in Memphis, I saw the
same selling for $800.00.

I am all for capitalism and free enterprise......
but this is pure price gouging.

I hope he goes home with his overpriced ammo,
but unfortunately someone will buy it. JMHO.

Those prices are criminal. But it's because everyone is panicking and buying AR-15's. I got tired of playing that game, sold mine and bought a Rossi lever action chambered in .38/.357. Not much demand for these calibers.

Double you tee eff, (as the kids say these days), what "price gouging"? This isn't Cuba or the old USSR. If you don't like the price, don't buy it. The guy is free to charge what he thinks it is worth, and a buyer is free to buy it. Or not.

Would you sell your house for what you paid for it, or would you want what you think the current market value is?

This is kind of what I have seen in Florida after the hurricanes.
People doubling and tripling the price of water,
batteries, and other needed items.

As I said in the OP, I am for capitalism and free enterprise,
but this is taking advantage of people fears and needs.

When they get above 80, sell!

This is only the beginning and it's all our own fault...

If everyone would just relax....and quit panic buying. I don't blame the retailers for jacking up prices ( don't like it ) they are there to make money!!!

If you had a old car, lets say market value was $3,000.00, but you knew someone would pay $5,000.00, wouldn't you take the 5 grand? I would!

Best

Bob

if you go to gun broker and look at the auctions that started at a penny and are now up to $400 when 2 weeks ago it was selling for only $200, its not the sellers fault its the fault of the people going on a feeding frenzy, and you know what that leads to.. retailers now can see how much you are willing to pay...

My FFL is a friend and he will keep a lookout for what I want. He called me yesterday and said that he got some 9mm in but that it was overpriced. Told me to wait and he would call me when he gets some cheaper stuff. While I can usually get some stuff cheaper on line, I believe in keeping my FFL happy even if his price is higher than I can get it for on line.

I certainly wouldn't pay $800 for a1k of .223 or $60 for a PMag. After Biden & crew get done next month, I may be wishing I did.

my home town gun store has a site on gun broker selling 7.62x39 ammo starting out at one cent and i know he sells them in store for $270 a 1000. so i would bid no more than $250 and kept getting out bid. the last time i looked all of the bids were over $350, so i made a run and picked up a case for $275 otd. and by the way the store normaly has 5-15 people in it at a time, today i almost didn't get in the parking lot and there must have been 40-50 people in the store. the cash registers had smoke comming out of them and the owner had a big grin on his face. i can't wait untill this "s**t" blows over..

If I lived in Florida I would be one of those selling water, batteries, and other needed items for double or triple what I gave for it. Now, if I saw someone who didn't have it through no fault of their own, I would probably give them some water and batteries. Anybody who lives in Florida and doesn't have a stock of those items at the beginning of hurricane season is an idiot.

There can be no such thing as price gouging in a free market economy. I have been stockpiling ammo and components for 20 years, seriously for ten years. I haven't had to take part in the panic, because I was prepared. Just because one isn't prepared doesn't mean someone else should do him a favor and sell his goods below market value.

Back around the year 2000 I used to think that Q3131 at $180 a case was pricey. Now I just think that those were the days.

I used to think the same way about "price gouging" until I started reading Walter Williams. This article relates to it.

I still have 1000 rds. I purchased a couple of years after the Y2K fiasco. I think by that time it had gone back down to about $160/1000.

I've said for years to buy it cheap and stack it deep. It ain't going to get any cheaper.

Just a thought about the ammo "shortages" and price gouging. Woman live longer than men and in the future there are going to be thousands of widows selling huge numbers of cases of ammo that their husbands bought and did not shoot.

My widow will shoot up most of the pistol ammo and all of the smaller bore rifle ammo.

Yeah, but that stuff is old now. You better send it to me for proper disposal.

For anyone new here, that comment was only in jest. Properly stored ammo will last a loooooong time.

The seller is free to ask whatever price he wants, whether anyone buys it or not is up to them. If you look online, the big retailers have either run out of stock or raised the price on what they have left. A friend who's primary business is ammo sales at shows told me that he may not be able to replace many of the items he has sold out of for some time. The distributors have run low or out and can't say when they will be restocked, and equally important, where the price will be when they are.

We've been through this before and it's always the same. Lots of new buyers, people who don't normally keep any stock of ammo put back and those who suddenly fear they don't have enough panic and rush out to buy and the normal sales cycle can't handle it. Businessmen still have bills to pay even if they run out of merchandise so the prices go up and people cry "foul". It's a problem, largely of our own making. Don't join the panic, let sales slow down, the odds are prices will stabilize and go back down again.

Price gouging is simply nature's way of ensuring that commodities get to those that need them the most and when they need them the most. Thus it always has been and ever will be. Nothing evil about it. Rationing is a far worse and much less efficient economic concept.

We all knew that, sooner of later, this "shortage" would come again. In the meantime some of us bought all we needed for the foreseeable future when the price was right and it was available. As any Boy Scout could tell us "Be Prepared". This isn't rocket science.

Default Yeah, but.

The short term gain may benefit the retailer.

But in my mind, I will remember Bolsa Gunsmithing for not going for the price gouge, and Ammo Bros. for selling .223's at $1 a round!

This has been my experience in Southern California.

Panic buying happens, IF your not prepared.

Happy New Year.

I just got the Cheaper Than dirt catalog and they are at it again! They are selling 1000 rounds of LC 223/5.56 ammo and they want 600 damn dollars! The last gun ban saw them way overpricing mags and ammo and they are at it again and even before the ban starts! They want $400 for 500 rounds of American Eagle .223 ammo loose in a bulk box.

I'm all for capitalism but what about customer loyality too? I for one will not be buying from them and haven't since the last ban.

When I first got into shooting a veteran LEO and experienced shooter gave me a bit of advice about ammo. He said that whenever I purchased any ammo to shoot 1/2 of it and set the other 1/2 aside in the event ammo becomes scarce someday. I questioned the wisdom of this initially, but several months later came the 2008 panic and ammo was indeed scarce. I ran into him during the height of the 2008 panic, and he reminded me again of what he told me. At the time he was selling Speer Gold Dots +P 9mm hollow points 250 rds for $100. I bought some and still have plenty today. I currently reload and I never thought we would have another run on ammo so soon. I am glad I followed his advice. Now if I can just find some small pistol primers.

And if we don't vote against every politician that votes against guns in the coming midterms, bad times and high prices will be the legacy we leave our children.

If that doesn't happen in the mid-term election our grandchildren (in my case) will never know the America I grew up in. I was hoping people would wake up and not reelect Obama but they did and now we are stuck with him for at least 4 years.

I was rather impressed by a locally owned sporting goods store yesterday. They had cases of 380. 9mm and 40 S&W stacked on the floor selling it at the same prices before all of this started.

I was at my LGS today and the shelves were still pretty full. I went in to get cci sv. And they had a lot, and same price I normally pay. I looked at 38/357 and also about the same price. I don't normally look at the prices on auto amino, or rifle rounds so no idea on if they went up. They had cases of 9mm on the floor that they were selling. Had plenty. Guess it makes sence to skip the big online places, and look at the local shops

Im guilty. To some extent. I had four 25 rnd mags for my 10/22. I paid $25 each. Last month i picked up four more for my brother. Well they never made it to my brother. I listed them on an auction site yesterday buy it now and they were gone in a couple hours.. I got 90$ each for them. I see the prices rising to close to 150$ in the very near future. Of course ill be holding on to the four of mine as they are just to much fun. Honestly i dont feel bad about it either. It is what it is. If you want it how much will you pay for it. Just like that scary looking AR or that shiny Model 27.
Gl and have fun

Wow, Buttugly072, did your brother give you that name?

I'm good to go - still have a stash of .22LRs - and I reload. I was in a big locally owned store yesterday - still had good prices - on what was left. I found a lone box of Hornady Critical Defense .22 WMR 45gr FTX - $15.25 inc s/t - same as last year. My 4" 651 is happy.

I thought they'd have a mess of trade-in revolvers - traded for ARs - oops on that! Folks are keeping their guns... all of them!

Happy New Year, all!

I'm gettin' a little old these days. I remember when gasoline was 28.9 and some station jacked it up to 31.9 on regular. You'd have thought the word fell in. The other day I paid the going rate, $3.35.9 a gallon. Then I remember the joke from my youth, What do you call a guy who won't pay the $.319 for gas? A pedestrian. Know what you call a guy who won't pay the going rate for ammo? A former shooter.

Its just economics. If you haven't been a hoarder and stocking up on ammo, your punishment will be paying a much higher price and having times when you can't get ammo. Trying to accumulate a respectable stock of ammo at this late date will really cost you a bundle. But the other outlook is what will happen to ammo prices in the future. History has shown its not getting cheaper after the rush is over. It just becomes more plentiful at the new, higher normal price.

So lets dance around the edges of politics. 4 years ago ammo dried up. There were all kinds of predictions about the prices wouldn't hold, or that in a few months it'd be right back down where it was in the past. What we've seen is the prices where everyone thought gouging was going on really have become normal or in some cases, the good old days.

One of my benchmark on price was Federal 550 Bulk packs. In the weeks before and after the 2008 election WalMart was selling them in my area for $13.46 I think. But they just sold out every box they got. Now the local price is $19.95, if you can find them (you can't). So I fully expect the price in 2013 to be up over $20 a box. At the gun show yesterday I saw a few cartons of 525s with an asking price at $25. Fewer rounds, higher price.

Anyone here remember when we shot 22 shorts because they were cheaper then 22 LR?

I remember when we went to a gunshow down in Paris, Kentucky. Small town, center of Bourbon County. I like the name at least. It was about 7 or 8 years ago. A guy over at the end of the first aisle had a bunch of estate ammo. Some other poor old guy died. So he was selling off the guys closet. I managed to buy the entire contents of 22 ammo for about $20, and it was in a box with what I'd guessed to be 1500 rounds. Others thought I was stupid (I've been accused of that frequently). I got ammo and headstamps I'd never seen before. A bunch of it! I had $20 worth of fun just sorting through it all.

I am starting to buy my reloading equipment and supplies. I put it off all last year but now the choice is clear.

I've made several back-ordered purchases from Midway, due 1st and 3rd week in January. Check AR-15.com for a thread that keeps up with real deals on 5.56/.223 ; 6.8 etc. Several options to backorder for those that have enough stash to hold them a couple of weeks. I'm more concerned about protection from civil unrest when obama and his boyz come calling. Just a matter of time, unless we want the likes of feinstein and bloomburg to dictate our freedoms.

LOL ,,, A few weeks ago ammo was selling for "X" now it's selling for "2 X" or "3 X".. I would say you should have bought it a several weeks ago when it was "X".

People that usually buy a box or two of ammo a year ,are buying two or three cases.

People standing in lines to buy ammo ,, mags., black rifles. Half of them probably don't know what they are buying, but they just have to have it anyway.

I just surely hope all these panic buyers let their voices be heard at the voting booth.

I've been thru 3 or 4 of these ammo / reloading component shortages. I always try to stay a year of two ahead of what I think I might need..
Sorry I'm not very sympathetic.

Cool

Right now , it's all greed and price gouging.

There's no big demand because of the war efforts or military contracts.

There's no spike in metal prices.

There's no major wholesale price increase from the manufacturer.

Just like the high prices for oil/gasoline , it's all about future speculation.
