My local dealer has amazing stories about the empty shelves at distributors. I finally decided to pick up a SSP226 and there aren't any anywhere he's telling me after a week of searching distributors. I was running low on range ammo and called Cabellas WAREHOUSE and they are out of ALL 9mm until late this month - and that's just an estimate.
Somethin' is happening....

Thanks Old TexMex, that makes sense.
And War and Peace is a fine read...I'm told.

hopefully price will settle down after all the panic subsides. 1$/rd of 223 is insane.

My memory is also razor sharp about them! I have not spent one penny with CTD since the Clinton Ban when I first noticed they were price gouging. If they were the last store standing I would do without rather than spend any money with them!

I spent as much money as I could allow on ammo leading up to the election, but I still didn't get the kind of supply I really wanted to have.
The reaction after Sandy Hook has been absolutely unfathomable. The is no practice/FMJ ammo in any caliber anywhere in western PA!! You can find expensive self defense and high end hunting ammo at your LGS, but nothing else. I realized I only had a few rounds of .308/7.62X51 ammo left and tried to buy about 100 rounds. ZIP not even a box of Remington Core Lokt at Wally World.
My LGS bought a 12,800 round drum of .223 off another dealer 100 miles away. Rolled it into his store, baggied the ammo 100 rounds to a bag and sold it all in three hours1

Got lucky today went to Dick's for some shoes and left with six value packs of .223. Bought a little for me and some for a friend. They said he just put it out a few minutes before I came in.

Glad you found some ammo.
You are aware that Dick's pulled all AR's from their shelves and canceled any orders placed for them before the Sandy Hook shootings, aren't you? They gave the customers a $100 gift card when they complained about canceling the orders.

I wasn't aware they did that I'm just happy I got a chance to actually buy some .223 it's been non-existent around here and what is available at the LGS is overpriced.

Here in Houston it is difficult to find 223 and 308 at WM. It is a hit or miss thing. After visiting several WMs over a period of a week, I walked into one on 02 Jan and found about 50 boxes of 223 American Eagle @ $6.67/box, as I remember, and I bought 30 boxes for a total of about $210 with tax. I have also found relatively cheap ($18-$20) 308 on two occasions. If you have the time and put forth the effort, you can find it; at least that has been my recent experience.
I was very lucky in that I was able to get 1000 rnds of Black Hills 5.56 from Midway just before they quit taking backorders.
I can't recall a time when Midway was refusing to backorder both non-seasonal ammo and mags. I wonder whether they are simply unable to get sure supplies from manufacturers or whether they are purposely not re-ordering in anticipation of some upcoming law.
I fear that internet ammo sales are going to be disallowed.

CLearfield, PA has two of the largest gun shops in the state. Grice Gun Shop and Bob's Army & Navy (also a big clothing retailer).
They are located about 75 miles NW of my home. In my area- 45 miles from Pittsburgh- .22LR Ammo, All pistol calibers and .223, .7.62X51/.308 Win., .30-30 and .30-06 are gone.
Made the drive to Clearfield today and found nice supplies of budget and target .22LR Ammo. CCI, Federal, Aguila, Remington, Blazer and others. 9MM supplies low at both, good .38 Special and 45ACP availability, though Grice had raised all its pistol ammo prices $3 to $7 a box since December. Boatloads of .30-06 and .30-30. However .308 Win/7.62 x51 is just about completely gone! .223/5.56 NATO is gone at Grice except for the $1 plus per round hunting ammo. Bob's had a few cases of Federal 5.56 NATO packed in the 300 round ammo cans they just got in. Price is UP- glad I don't have a .223!

I saw on the TV news this evening that it was absolute chaos at the local gun show today (Saturday). I'm planning to go early tomorrow morning just to see what it looks like. Sundays usually have much lower attendance, but it may be different now.

Can't find CCI mini-mag .22 rimfire anywhere. None in stock at Cabela's, Bass Pro, Ammo 2 Go, Cheaper Than Dirt, Gander Mountain and LGS within 100 miles of where I live. There are some different brand .22 rimfire ammo out there but no CCI MiniMag or Stingers.

Just to touch up on this subject. My ammo connection has told me today that cheap 7.62x39 is now a thing of the past. The distributors have went up on their prices. He even offered to buy all my ammo back plus give me an extra $150 on top of each 1000rd box that i've bought from him.
You guys better grab it, if you can. It's about to be priced like .223 is right now.
On another note, u may all want to rack up on the 12 gauge 00 Buck also. My sources tell me those are on the inclining buying list also.

I bought .223 at my LGS last week PMC 20 rounds boxes at $7.65. I bought all 8 boxes he had. Same thing at my other LGS PMC .223 for $8 a box of 20. Bought all 10 boxes he had...these are decent prices. I think both stores have a lot more but won't put it all out. That way more people get something instead of 1 person getting it all.
All other ammo is plentiful including 7.62 x39, especially steel cased and prices are almost normal..$330/1000

At the local gun show today, there was not nearly the amount of ammo for sale seen as usual. 5.56mm military type ball was going for about $1/round, hunting somewhat more. 7.62x39 Russian stuff was about 50 cents/round, and there seemed to be much more of it around than 5.56mm. .22 LR, what little there was of it, was about $35/brick. .45 ACP, 9mm, and .40 S&W FMJ was going for $20-25/box. Only one guy with primers was there, but not outrageous prices- $35/box of 1000. He was limiting sales to one box of primers per customer. I bought a box of small pistol size, but he had about 10 more boxes of SP, so I probably should have gone back later to get one more. AR-type rifles were starting at about $2k.

The problem is going to be when (if) they outlaw internet sales of ammo. If they don't do it at the federal level, some more liberal states - like mine - will likely do it on their own and won't allow ammo sales over the net. Not really sure how that will impact prices, but at that point large retailers (WM, Dicks, etc) and LGS will be more in control of / able to influence prices on a regional level...

Yep doing it to ourselves again. The ammo is out there it just gets snapped up usually by one individual. I went into the local Wal-Mart and the "sporting goods" employee told me the day before one individual bought 81 boxes of assorted .223 ammo basically everything they had. I went to Dick's and they had just put out various packs of .223 just as I walked up I bought six packs (they only allow six per customer) and that left a bunch of twenty, fifty and a couple of hundred round packs. The employee told me it won't last an hour once "word got out" they had some .223. Finding the ammo there gave me a little "confidence" that at least the ammo is still out there somewhere and hopefully it will level off.

I got a break
I got a break because reloading bullets were on backorder at Midway, but I was notified that they were shipping the whole thing. Back order might not really be back order unless you are looking for .223

Several states already have restrictions on mag capacity and online vendors will not ship anything that could be in violation to those states. It would be easy enough for a state to require face to face purchase on ammo and threaten vendors with legal action for shipping onto that state. There are many restrictions on interstate commerce already.

I haven't seen it but at the same time, the last time that I bought ammo was long before Sandy Hook.

part of the problem with online dealers is they might have ammo in stock but its all hollow-point rounds. and it is all marked way up. a few months back we could get a 50 rd box of 9mm for 10.99 now its ending up past 18-19 bucks a box, if you can find it. Gun show in ontario last weekend, the lines for ammo where 2 hours long, and they were only taking order for it. 3 week wait!

We've got ammo shortages in NH as well. The local WM manager said the WM distribution centers have plenty in their supply chain, however it sells out as soon as it gets put on the shelf, he said it's mostly guys buying very large amounts at a time and there's nothing he can do about it because there's no ammo purchase limit in his store.

Looks like Cabela's is drying out also, the .22lr and steel cased Herters .223 that could be backordered are no longer on the site.

Pretty much stocked up on everything that I like to shoot. Not hoarding by any means. In 2008 I invested in Olin stocks before the election. I tripled my money. Still have Olin stocks. Bought into Ruger a while back. It's been kind to me so far. S&W was a choice but after talking to my broker there was some funny stuff going on internally at S&W. Big sell off if I remember right. Not good.
Hopefully, this will pass. Fear mongering is what the media thrives on. I refuse to succumb to the media. My goal is to add 2-3 new NRA members daily. It's the best bang for the buck..

I'm pretty well stocked up on all of the calibers I use, so
I've been working on filling out my shotgun needs.
I don't know if people are just buying anything, or the ammo manufacturers
are concentrating on keeping up with the more popular rounds,
but even some 20 gauge is getting hard to find on-line.

You can get pretty much anything here in ME except for 223. Every time I've been to WM and cabelas there is no 223. Not sure if they are getting any in stock at any point or not

Yes. In my area .22 LR ammunition is completely sold out of all the local gun shops as well as places like Wal-Mart, etc.
Yesterday a church member told me of a gun shop in a town 29 miles away that she thought had ammo. I drove over and found they had plenty of everything including .22 LR ammo. I was able to buy four bricks of American Eagle, which was their limit for a single purchase. They said they were getting fairly low in inventory and wanted to make sure that everyone could shoot their guns. I was told that if I wanted to, I could buy another couple of bricks next week. Cool. They had no limit on the number of 100 rd. boxes of ammo like CCI Mini-Mags, etc. I'll be buying that for use with a Marvel .22 LR Conversion Unit that I recently purchased. I'll use the American Eagle in my 15-22.

9mm is non existent in the Tampa Fl area
I've managed to scoop some 40 & 380..
It is really sad because I need the 9 for teaching but i'll be forced to make them shoot the 40
This came at a bad time because my little brother just came home from the marines so we blew through all my range ammo before he left and now i'm wishing i'd gotten more while he was here

And here I sit in my poverty. I look over and the fireplace is cold. The cats have found someplace else to nap. None of my grandkids are here. And now I read a thread about the lack of ammo and none being available.
And I think that I don't have a single round of .223. Not even a single round! Oh what has become of me. And then I think back of the weekend. I did manage to buy 150 rounds of .357 but the member here who sold it to me charged me $300 for it! That's $2 a round!

Warm yourself by going back thru all your old threads and comments about the loads of old ammo you grabbed at shows while others laughed at you. Surely you remember where you put it all!

Of course, but I still don't own even a single round of AR ammo! Of course I also don't own an AR and there might be a connection. In fact, I'd bet on it.

Finally it is paying off to be a hoarder/packrat. Years ago I bought a bunch of steel case .223, never intending to shoot it in my AR's as I felt the firearm wasn't designed for steel cases. Don't ask why I bought it, it was dirt cheap and available, that's just the way I am. It's sat under the bench until today. I sold it back to a dealer for 5x what I paid for it.
Boy did that feel good!
Been reloading since 1980 and casting since '90, packrattin' all the while.
I don't feel as optimistic as some of y'all. This isn't 'blowing over'.
Good luck.

I shoot what I buy. I also buy powder, primers and bullets with each purchase. When there's no more ammo, I will have plenty of brass and everything i need with it!

Actually you're not alone in that line of thinking. I too have been considering the move. Don't get me wrong as I will continue to shoot but this still gets me out on the range and no ear plugs are needed.

Nothing left here in NY. I have a bunch on backorder, we will see when and if it shows up. I heard DHS ordered something like 400 million rounds which will not help the availability.

Ammo to go is out of certain rounds and has limited amounts of others they have posted on their site that due to high demand an order is taking 22-24 days to complete.

Besides stocking up, we have to contact our legislators on this issue. Email has made it easier. Also helpful to support NRA-ILA and -PVF.

My friends and I certainly hoped he would be. I honestly don't know anyone that voted for him, or at least will admit to it.
