What is your favorite 10mm ammo round for self defense?
I just picked up some Hornady 200gr. XTP today. What do y'all carry in your 10mms?

Either Federals 155gr. JHP (out of production now) or Winchesters 175gr. Silvertip. Both are full power 10mm, not watered down .40 wannabes!
That 200gr. XTP will be a deep penetrator, and I think it's rated at a little over a thousand FPS? Dale

I carry 180 gr XTPs -- 1180 fps. Up until recently, I was able to purchase this load for $15.99/box. Silvertips are another great load.
I'm set up to handload 10mm, so future loads will be home-brew. I have a box of 200 gr XTP bullets that I'd use for hunting or woods carry in general. Hope to reach about 1180 fps with those.
But the Delta Elite is now in the Colt Custom Shop waiting it's turn for the Tactical Package. Hope I'll have it back in time for my birthday in October.

I handload 180gr XTPs over Power Pistol and get right at 1200 - 1250fps out of a Delta Elite.

I put Silvertips in my 10mm but for hunting I use reloads. I tool up 200 Lead TC's to about 1200 FPS with 800x.

I am currently loading my own 10mm rounds.
I am shooting a fairly stout load of Power pistol behind a 180 Speer Gold dot. Appears to work well out of my S&W 1006. Major muzzle flash though so I may try some other powder.
I would think that any premium bullet on top of enough powder to drive it to true 10mm velocity should work well.

10mm
Carried WW silver tips and Hydra shoks for years....have transitioned to Cor bon and double tap in the past couple of years....they load more to the full potential of the 10mm....also reload, but tend to carry the Cor bons or DT's.

Hornady 200 gr XTP. I have Not experimented with this much as an SD weapon. But my 1086 is loaded with Hornady's and resides in the house in case it is ever needed. I will pay more attention to velocity but when I ordered it that was my only choice.

Im new to 10mm and researching for the same information.
Is it better to have more energy / velocity or is there a balance so you dont have over penetration?
Heres a chart I came across where the individual actually tests the power of each and compares to the 'claimed' amount of each.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...Fa25xa1E#gid=0
His youtube channel that shows him testing various ammos

When I had a Glock 20, my favorite carry ammo was Double Tap 180 grain JHP. It walked the walk and talked the talk.

Winchester Silvertips. Only round I use. Not absolute hottest one available but a perfect ... Hotter than most and performs as well as any others in this class. Use them in .40 also.

I have all the DT offerings in 10mm but my favorite is the 135gr Nosler. My wife can shoot the 135gr but its downside is the flash.

I like the Federal Hydroshock to shoot, but the question was self-defense.
+1 on the Winchester Silvertips!

Silvertips are great as well as Hornady. I always thought the HP on the Hornady XTP bullet was too small but friends have had great hunting results with both the Hornady 180 and 200 gr. XTP bullets. Said they penetrate well too.
I have a box of Federal 180 .-Shoks. They aren't that hot, but supposedly the best commercial 10mm round that won't over penetrate.
Always wanted to try the 180 Nosler from Double Tap, but I'm sure they've sold out by now.

180 gr.lrnfp , 5.1 gr. Accurate #2 in the Glock 29.
I can shoot this load skillfully°, low flash powder, and its 100% reliable.
°Skillfull work is both accurate and fast.

If you ask us "old timers" with the cartridge (shooting the 10mm since 1991) my inclination runs to 155 to 165 grain full-house loads. This encourages abrupt and violent expansion, while permitting adequate penetration. It comes down to a "balancing act."

I use either the Federal 180JHPs or the 190JHPs that were speced for the MP5/10s. Contrary to Internet rumor, this is not a lite load.
The Hornady XTP ammunition is also very good.
The Federal works wonderfully in my S&Ws, SIGs, Witnesses, HK and 1911s.
The Federal terminal ballistics were quite effective over the years
