Federal or CCI??
I have been reading around the internet looking at the reviews on which ammuniction should be used in a s&w m&p 15-22. I am currently looking for one to buy in the next week or so. The reveiws were mixed between CCI mini mag and bulk Federal ammo. BUt which federal ammo?? There is are many different types of federal. I am wondering what is the best ammo for self defence and a different type for target. Or the best of both. Yes some will ask why dint you just get an AR-15 but frankly I just turned 20 and the cash flow isnt up to par with everyone else. I will soon be getting an ar after15-22.
Thanks

Welcome Chris.
I'd suggest you buy a couple of 50 round boxes of all the different .22 ammo you can find and see what runs best in your rifle.
Hollow points for self defense of course.

If you can find them try the CCI Velocitors. 40 gr JHP with a high velocity... Just below the CCI Stingers velocity. I don't own a 15-22 sporting rifle but they shoot well in bolt rifles.

This is directly from the M&P15-22 Manual:
Quote:
Based on the design and action of the M&P15-22, Smith & Wesson
recommends that you use the following brands and types of .22LR ammunition
for optimal performance in your M&P15-22 rifle:
• CCI Standard Velocity................ • Federal American Eagle
• CCI Mini-Mag............................ • Federal GameShock
• Aguila Super Extra Std. Velocity... • Winchester Super-X High Velocity
• Aguila Super Extra High Velocity

I get good results from the............
Federal Amer. Eagle 38gr chp and
cci 0038 40gr Lhp Sub-Sonic
for a std and low vel load in my rifles.
I usually buy the value paks but that might be harder to do right now. Good luck.

I've had good luck with Federal Auto-Match Rifle too. 325 round boxes if you can find some!

I just happen to like Federal Automatch however at this stage buy whatever 22 ammo you can find. Scheel's in Lincoln was out of 22 ammo. Cabela's in Kearney was out. of 22 ammo

Most anything you shoot in it will work fine. Beg, buy, or steal several different brands and types to see how it handles each of them. The best is the cheapest that works OK. I have found that the cheap Remington .22 HP stuff in the 525 round box seems prone to misfires, and have read that others have also found the same thing.

I've had a miserable time with Federal 22 ammo, and won't buy any more of it. Too many misfires.

Federal runs great in my brother's 10/22, but isn't worth shooting in my AR7.
My AR7 handles CCI flawlessly where as my TC tends to fling them.
.22's a finicky, try out a few and see what works.

So the best thing to do is go to my local gun shops and buy small boxes of ammo ( 50+) and run them all through and just process of elimination. And ik about the manual and what it reccomends. But thanks fellas im pricing around and looking to buy one after taxes come in. And buying my wife the pink platinum version too.
