Default Herter's Ammo?

Anyone ever heard of this manufacturer? I had not. I went to my LGS to see if I could find any self-defense ammo and for range, since I bought my M&P Shield 9. They didn't have any self-defense ammo, and the range ammo was scarce. They had PMC at a decent price (only 6 boxes though). So I picked that up. But I had a little more money to spend so I saw this other cheaper Herter's Select Grade 115gr FMJ. Based out of Czech Republic. I had not heard of them and they had some 35 boxes there. I got 3. Any ideas about this ammo?

The steel cased stuff comes from the same plant as Wolf and Tulammo. The aluminum stuff is CCI (US Made), and the brass stuff is *Sellier & Bellot last I checked. Decent range ammo, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

Repackaged cheap stuff, capitalizing on Herter's name.

haven't used the steel or aluminum cased stuff but the brass stuff is just fine for range use - have used both the 9mm & 40 S&W

I thought that was Cabelas brand ammo. I got some .223 steel cased Herter's when Cabelas had it on sale for 4.99 or 5.99 a box I forget. I hadn't had a chance to shoot it but it was TULA so I dont for see any issues.

Cabelas owns the rights to the Herter's brand name now.

Cabelas has used three different manufacturers for their brass cased ammo so far: Fiocchi of Italy, Sellier & Bellot of the Czech Republic (which is currently being sold and has cases stamped HRTRS) and a single run of .380 ammo made by PT PINDAD of Indonesia.

I was wary of the .45 ACP HRTRS headstamp but this is high quality brass and I now allow it to mix with the general population in the brass bin.

I bought 500 rounds of the 7.62x39 154 gr. SP from Cabela's and two out of 400 fired so far exhibited faulty and incomplete burning of the powder charge, causing the bullets to be stuck in the bore just ahead of the chamber. I don't know if these powder charges were contaminated or the powder is borderline appropriate for this heavy for caliber bullet. In any event, this load is not to be trusted for anything beyond putting holes in paper.

I was going to remark that somebody must have purchased the Herters name. Nothing is sacred anymore.

Default Herter's 223 Ammo

Checking thru my storage cabinet I found some Herter's match grade soft point 223 55gr ammo. From the packaging info it says bullets and brass cases mfg in Finland. This ammo is probably a good 30 years old and the packaging is silver/black not the current tan/orange, been stored in USGI ammo cans for many years. I'm sure there are a few members that are familiar with this ammo, like to hear your comments.
