Default Moon Clips - idea for storage/transportation of loaded clips

Thought you Moon Clip shooters might like this idea. Found these soft plastic cylinders with caps at the hardware store. Used for screws, nails, small parts, etc. around the shop or garage. Brand name is 'Viewtainer.' Really nice, inexpensive solution for Range Bag. The company has a couple different sizes, and various colors for the caps. After seeing them in the store, I ordered direct from the company (US Made!) so my OCD personality could get the same color caps. Pictures below with my 625PC .45ACP, works nicely for my 627 .38/.357 8-shot as well. Might work for you, enjoy

Pfffffffft.... That would be just too organized for me. I throw them in a small tool bag that fits inside of my range bag.

Engieman,

In some states IT'S NOT LEGAL to possess LOADED SPEEDLOADERS OR MAGAZINES, even WITHOUT a firearm.

If you DO NOT have a CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT, they are considered a LOADED FIREARM all by themselves.

Ohio Law is this way, its PRESENTLY BEEN CHANGED, and we're awaiting the completion of a 90 day waiting period for it to take effect.

I know some folks like to load up to be ready for the range, but it's another qwerk to firearms regulations state wise.

YIKES!

Maybe Kalifornistan isn't the worst. Glad it's getting changed.

I store my mooned ammo in pint freezer bags in an ammo can. A pint bag holds 8 moons.

"The perpetrator entered the building and opened fire with a moon clip."
Yet another state that I'll be sure not to move to.

I use old prescription pill bottles (larger size). Work great, free, and most have a child proof cap.

Best,

I like it. Wonder how they price out. In my benighted State, it really pays to have a CCL and not have to worry about such things.

While I don't have any pictures of the one that I made, and I stole the idea from somewhere on the web, I like the empty CD/DVD "cake trays" for storing loaded moonclips. (photo also lifted from the web)

My case isn't as tall as the picture I found on the internet, but any will work. The center rod on mine holds loaded moon clips about 3 high. I went around the perimeter of the base and duplicated the center rod using 1/4" all thread through holes I drilled around the circle. Then used a thin nut on the bottom and a locknut on the top, to secure the rods in place. Seems like I got 7 or 8 to fit, evenly spaced apart.

Each of the new rods holds at least 3 stacks of loaded moonclips, so if it was 8 + the center one, it holds 27 loaded clips, and I have a lid.

I can already see that I should have used large fender washers to support the plastic floor, possibly top & bottom. Or I might just use and old disk to drill through along with the floor holes on the next one. It's heavier than I thought it would be, and I think I can get 4 of them inside the narrow metal ammo cans, and that give me 324 loaded rounds on 54 moonclips. (But I only have 50, so far).

The best drill bit for making the holes in the plastic is one of those "step bits", as they don't catch, snag and try to crack the plastic. And don't over torque the nuts. I'll try to remember to drag it out for a photo,...... or there might be one online somewhere. I read about the idea, but never saw one until mine was finished. I like the flat clear tackle box too.

How many moon clips can you fit in each tackle tray?

And are you putting 5 shot 9mm moon clips in or bigger 6 shot moon clips for calibers starting in 4 and up?

This probably won't be well received on this site, but an orphaned 2" J-frame box will hold 15 loaded moon clips with room for common bubble wrap top, bottom & side (in other words, one piece).

Of course, most on this site would regard the box as estranged, or long-lost, rather than orphaned. Meanwhile, until reunited, it might as well earn its keep.

I still prefer the large plastic prescription pill bottles !
They're free , I'm repurposing them and I'm satisfying my hoarding pack-rat tendencies... I hate to throw good junk away !!!

24 loaded moons, 8 shot .38 short colt (specials fit too). I just ordered a second one that will get me through an ICORE match without having to re-load moons.

I thought about making something like fishslayer's but I really don't take that many to the range. I do like k22's, I get three clips in one bottle and take 4 or 5. to the range. I can tuck them in various corners of the my range bag. For 9mm I use the plastic deli containers that rammer jammer mentioned. I've been called "the Tupperware guy" more than once. It will hold around two hundred 9mm which is about what I shoot per visit. Don't know how many 38 Spcl or 32-20 they hold but still one container of each is good per trip.

I take a lot of meds. The short fat pill bottles for want of a better explantion are perfect for storing either the metallic one or the polymer RIMZ full moon clips. Best part I always have a few around the house. Frank

Being a little older than most.......

I have a few pill Rx bottles that will swallow two loaded moon clips.
One of my all time favorites is the Planters 16oz. plastic bottle, for items.

The large pill bottles also work great for .22 lr ammo, they hold 150 rounds or so. I fill them from my bulk boxes.

Thumbs up

I've been shooting moonclipped revolvers in IPSC-style competition for thirty years. I have tried many of the ideas shown above and nothing wrong with any of them.

After all these years, I've settled on a Dillon ammo bag with two compartments. One gets filled with about twice as many loaded clips as I probably need. The other side gets extra loose ammo plus a moonclip tool and a demooner. Never had this arrangement cause me a problem and is a perfect KISS.
