+P is a SAAMI (Sporing Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) designation for ammunition that's loaded to slightly higher pressures than standard. SAAMI defines cartridge/chamber dimensions and maximum allowowable pressures to insure that factory guns and ammunition are safe and compatible.

And +P should only be used in guns designed to use +P ammunition.

Depending on weight, barrel length, etc. (and it's just a rough estimate for comparison), a. 38 special bullet travels about 900-1000 fps, the +p will add about 100 fps to that.

Like said above, +P = + Pressure. BUT, IMO it's mostly hype to enable the ammo companies to charge you more money for ammo. In many cases the pressures are only slightly more than standard limits and the velocity gain is minimal. The marketing weenies found a way to charge us more!

+P is a factory load that is somewhere between standard, and magnum.

Yes, and that +P is a lot closer to standard than magnum.
There is also +P+ ammo, which is a little hotter than +P.

30 years ago good factory +p ammo had much more spunk than standard ammo did. Nowadays, I don't think it's worth it. I'll just load my own. I made some REAL +Ps loads in .38 that were somewhat more powerful than most manuals publish today. I was so 'satisfied' with the results I dropped the loads back a tad.

I have shot 38 spl ammo in my..........686 6" 357 magnum,since I do not own a 4" barrel.
A Factory 38 spl 110gr load rated at +/- 945 fps.
Here is what I got out of my 6" magnum.
Standard +p @ 999fps
Treasery +P+ @ 1290fps (steel K frame or larger only )
As you can see,the barrel length can add fps ,even though the load has the same pressure in both guns, for the standard +P loads.
The +P+ load is only for information purposes..........DO NOT USE !!!
