Default Here We Go - Ammo Prices!!

Early this morning I lucked into three boxes of WWB Value Pak-100 rounds at Walmart's normal price of $34. By comparason Cabelas was selling .22 LR for $50/100 while my LGS has the same ammo (forgot the brand) for $29/100. I understand supply and demand, but these differences are significant. Anybody else experiencing the same thing?

I saw 22LR at walmart today at its normal price and I picked up some .40 S&W for $18 a box and some .223 at a higher price but it as not the cheaper stuff to begin with but it was available and I had not seen any of it anywhere for awhile so I grabbed some. Cabelas was selling American Eagle 223 for $10 a box at the start of Feb but have not seen any there since then. Have not really seen to much of price gouging around here.

My local wal-mart is selling the 100rd box Federal 9mm Luger 115GR in the maroon box for $8.97. Weird thing is the ammo has been on the shelf all morning and they still have a good 30 boxes of so left as of about an hour ago. Maybe the 9mm ammo hunters are so exhausted by empty shelves that they quit looking for ammo.

They even have a Colt in 5.56 at the same wal-mart.

wow thats a shock. Most of the ammo I have found has all been from walmart. In my area it seems to be on the shelf more towards mid day not when they first open. I found 223 and .40 at two different walmarts today both past noon time and one of them had 22LR as well.

Hi Smitty
Are you sure it was $8.97 for the 100 and not $18.97 ? Thanks

Pretty positive it was $8 something(ish). I actually had to look at that price a few times to see if my eyes were playing tricks on me. Same with the Colt AR. I had to look a few times to be sure i was seeing an AR in the display case. And a Colt at that, lol.

How about the shop in Jacksonville that dropped prices on their AR stock $600-$800 dollars from Friday to the following Monday? If they can do that that quick, there is no reason they should be $2,000 for an M&P sport. Can you imagine the irate people that may have bought one at that price and then seen that they dropped the price to $949 3 days later ?

Yep. In Gander in Palm Beach today. Looks like the ammo has gone up about 20-30 percent depending on how they felt about at the time. At least the personal protection stuff I noticed.

Lets see:

500 count Hornady 124 Grain FMJ-RN = $58.00
500 count Remington 1-1/2 primers = $14.50
500 charges Power Pistol Powder @ 5.5 grain = $7.75
500 count recycled brass cases from the range = $0.00.

2 Hours uninterrupted solitude in the fortress = Priceless.

Total = $16.05/100 count.

My LGS has ammo in the pipeline from ATK (Federal, CCI) and PMC distributors. He said his cost has gone up about $4 a box on 9MM and .40 S&W, nearly $5 a box on .45 ACP, .38 Special, .357 Mag and .44 Mag.
Rimfire ammo has similar cost increases. His cost on CCI Blazer went from $16.50 for 500 to $25 for 500. Federal 510 .40 grain went from costing him $18 per 500 to nearly $28 per 500. If that is the case, it looks like $28 to $40 a brick will become normal price. Part of the cost increase is higher transportation costs. $4.25 per gallon diesel fuel has lead to much higher freight charges since January.

People on armslist prices:

50 9mm: $25. (Should cost $13-15)
550 .22lr $50 (Should cost $24.99)

I can't even go out to the range anymore. Its ridicules. In Cleveland Area Wal-Marts are sold out all over, gander and Fin Feather and Fur prices are about 30% more.

So now I just buy the firearms instead of ammo. The prices are fairly consistent and when things settle down I am going to buy cases of ammo online in bulk.

WE... are going to see prices increase.... thats just a fact...with what freight expenditures are now... diesel is...in some places almost $4.50 a gallon.... we will have a new price norm... once all this lack of finding settles down...and stock returns....

You are fortunate- all the Walmarts in my area are only stocking hunting rifle and shotgun ammo at the moment. No .22 LR and no pistol ammo.

I bought three CCI HP mini-mag 100 round plastic boxes at Walmart this morning for $7.27 each. That left one on the shelf.

Went to Gander Mountain and bought five CCI CPRN mini-mag 100 round boxes for $7.99 each. While waiting to check out at GM, I was told that the Canton FFF had 525 round bulk packs for $30.00 (limit 1 box). Since I had scored 800 rounds already, I decided not to sit in the FFF parking lot waiting for them to open for one more bulk pack.

One thing to consider is that Walmart does not buy ammo at the same places your local shop does. They contract directly with the manufacturer and buy huge quantities and certainly pay a lot less per box than any LGS can. Your gun shop has to buy from distributors, not dirctly from the mfg. Even if they buy a large quantity from a distributor they are not going to get the kind of price break Walmart does.

Another thing to remember is that big box stores like WM do not depend on gun & ammo sales for the bulk of their business. They have plenty of other things to sell so they can use a lot smaller markup and still stay in business. That also means that if the ammo shelves get empty it's not such a big deal as it would be for a little gunshop.

Walmart is a giant corparation and many different small stores have gone out of business because they can't compete with the walmart price structure. The majority of people go for the lowest price every time.

Lastyear I thought that $220 was high for 5,000rds of blazer cci 22lr.

I figured with the high cost of the larger calibers with the family of all new shooters we could all shoot the 22's till this calms down.

I never could figure out why $1 per gallon price jump in fuel makes the product prices skyrocket.

At 8 mpg, the truck is paying an extra 12 cents per mile for fuel. Let's say they shipped the product 2,000 miles including the distribution warehouse and smaller delivery trucks. So a truckload costs an extra $240 to deliver.

If that truck is carrying 2,000 boxes of tennis shoes or 2,000 boxes of ammo, the price per box is less than a dime. Yet the prices we see on the store shelves go up by a buck an item or more.

I think it's just an excuse to jack prices.

Diesel has been over $4 for quite some time, at least a year in my parts (except for a brief period last summer)

I would say that hyperinflation following stagflation is the culprit as a result of the govt bailouts, housing collapse and pumping trillions of fantasy money into the economy thus devaluing the dollar. You are just seeing the tip of the iceberg.

Was at WalMart last night and walked down to the sporting goods dept just to see what everybody has been squawking about. Only centerfire handgun ammo I saw was 2 boxes of 100 .40 S&W and 2 boxes of 100 .45 acp. $38.77 and $40.77 respectively. Not too bad,but I don't need any ammo.

I went to a gun show today and ammo selection & prices were all over the place. I asked one vender if he had any .22 LR and was told nobody had any. Walked around a bit and found some at fairly reasonable prices, but you had to be careful. Some vendors were gouging while others were pricing fairly.

Hopefully this will end soon . . .

Just out of curiosity, what were examples of reasonable pricing at a gun show?

Here's a neat video on how .22 ammo is made. From the TV Show.

I guess I have had my head in the sand... where did you get that info?
My google-foo says that report is false.

Recent purchases from the local ACE Hardware, AE .22LR 36grHP $1.99/40, AE .40 S&W 165 or 185gr $18.95/50, Winchester .45ACP 230FMJ White Box $29.95/50 and PMC .223 FMJ at my local BX for $7.60/20. I am unwilling to pay the "gouge rate" for ammo when with a little looking it is available at a fair price.

While in the past I HAVE reloaded rim fire ammo for general shooting it's more trouble than it's worth. As for reloading center fire ammo last October I panic bought whan should be a multi year supply of primers for my wife and I when Tulas were on sale for $17.50 per K. So between low cost primers and casting my own bullets I can shoot 40 S&W for less than 22 LR.

Same here in Northern Michigan. No pistol or 22 of any kind.

Got 3 -100 hundred round packs of Federal .223 55 grain at Walmart yesterday for $34 each. Had to stand in line for almost an hour before the register opened and was 6th in line even getting there that early.

Same for me!

I have not yet showed up at 7-8AM like the Wally clerks tell me is the norm. To much other stuff going on, and working late every night crimps my style for pre dawn missions at my age/shape....

I do visit often around lunch or after work...three times a week or so trying to get lucky, but also buy other items for business and home every time I go in.
Hasnt worked though....I have not seen .22, 308, .223 in three months at this one Wal Mart near my office....

I walked in around 1:00PM the same day ...they had four boxes of .223 left in the locked cabinet!

I thought the local buying group must have gone to Dicks or Gander Mountain that AM for some big ammo in stock event...reached their limit, or just ran out of money!

On another note: my biggest problem is finding a clerk with the key, I have some joint problems and painful/hard to walk some days just getting back to ammo cabinet.
I've then had to walk 1/2 the store width to Electronics looking for a clerk (on numerous ocassions), ask for assistance, only to return and not have anyone show up......

I HATE to walk looking for a clerk...just bothers me considerably. Ive killed time, looked around sporting goods for 15 minutes before, and timed it.

So, I started trying to figure out the counter phone to dial for an operator...I wanted to page but didnt know the dial feature (anyone know?) ....and think that got their attention...even gestured at the black eye in the ceiling, security camera lens: "come help me here".

This Wal mart doesnt sells firearms so has an open counter in aisle.

Heard on PA shortly thereafter "cusomter needs assistance in sporting goods"...I waved at the camera...thanks....

I dont know if they saw me, or the clerk forgot she told me she would page someone.....

Ammo Manufacturers will Lower prices if there is little
demand for ammo.

That's news to me... And, by the way, The treaty was proposed at the United Nations, not NATO.

Went to walmart early this morning to pick up printer paper. Walked by the ammo case and there were two lone boxes of Winchester .38 special. Left them there.

Came home and now my son and I are setting up the presses to load a thousand .38 wadcutters.

I had been going to walmart in the mornings 2 weeks straight and then I had work this past week and was unable to, but some how when I call in and ask if they had 9mm they told me they did not but they had .22lr. They were the 50 round boxes of remington subsonic but I was happy I got something.

Man I wish some of that Federal 223 would show up in my area once in awhile.

The only thing that has been showing up around here is the Tulammo and I am done buying it until I verify it shoots half decent out of my sport.

Lets see, 14 days in Wal*Mart. Maybe an hour each day? Plus gas. Plus wear on your ride.

Minimum wage is what - $7.70 per hour?

If you score any ammunition and sell it you have to take a profit of $107.80 plus expenses before you break even.

No wonder Internet prices are so high. The up-front cost is outrageous!

I was at a gun show in Inverness FL. yesterday & saw .22lr Win. 555 bricks for sale for $125.00. About 1 1/2 months ago my local WalMart had some of the same for sale at $23 plus tax.
I hope people remember the gougers after we return to normal.

Yeah even some companies are price gouging like Cheaper Than Dirt.com the name is a joke and they and others want over $120 for a brick of 22lr. I will remember the gougers when things get back to normal. There are also good companies that are rarely stocked but are keeping there prices low. These are the companies I will continue to buy from in the future.

Lgs had 40 s&w PMC for $17.50 today. Limit 5 boxes. I would guess they had around 500 boxes. Opened at 10am gone at 10:20. It was like Black Friday. They even handed out rainchecks. Wonder how many were gougers?
