I shot my Ruger MK2 pistol in a Steel Challenge event today and was using Remington .22 LR 550 Bulk pack ammo and had almost 20 mis-fires in 100 rounds fired...as in the rim was struck very well and no ignition.

I re-chambered them one at a time and rotated the cartridge so that the firing pin would strike the rim in a totally different spot. Still no ignition.

This gun has always been totally reliable with anything. I will try the Ruger with different ammo..Winchester, Federal, CCI etc to confirm that the gun is fine...

Until now I have never had a problem with Remington bulk .22 ammo...looks like things have just changed..

Remington 550 bulk has been a problem for me in the past. I've had some boxes that had many no ignitions. And i've had other boxes that had very few. During a time like this Rimington is probably trying to push them out as quick as possible because of the demand. So it wouldnt be surprising that we see more of the problems repeating.

You need to switch to Federal Champion 510 (Round nose solid).
They work flawlessly in my Mark II and 10/22. I have NEVER had an ignition failure.

Shooting comps I would suggest using some better quality ammo. For plinking I would not even waste my money on that remington garabge, that garbage is the worst 22lr I have ever fired. You want cheap bulk ammo, go wih the 525 bulk packs of federal 36 grain hollows you might get 1 FTF per hundred. That stuff shoots in any firearm I have put it in including mark's.

As a range officer, I see thoundands of rounds of 22 rimfires shot yearly. I have no loyalty to any brand. I record any malfunctions I see, so I have some observations. The most consistant round of 22 ammo I have seen in the last 20 years is the Federal 550 packs. I detect an average of 1 misfire or squib per box of 550. I have seen them shot in countless firearms. The worst I have seen are the Remingtons. They were so bad, I bought a bulk box of 550 and shot them in 3 different firearms. I did this in an hour. I recorded misfires and squib loads. I have since misplaced the data, but IIRC there was @2 duds and 3 squibs per 50 rounds.

Went back to the range today to test the Remington 550 Bulk ammo some more.

What I found was that my Winchester 9422 had no problems with Remingtion 550 Bulk in over 100 rounds fired, my Browning Buckmark had one FTF in 6 magazines, my S&W M17 ran flawlessly through over 60 rounds.

The Ruger MK 2 seemed happiest with CCI 0032 Standard Velocity/ CCI Green Tag as well American Eagle/Federal.

I also had about 100 rounds of some old Remington Golden Bullet in the square 100 round yellow plastic box and it ran flawlessly in the Ruger.
Was an interesting day...I have 6 cartons of the Remington 550 Bulk that I now know will be fine in my rifles and S&W revolver.

I got distracted when posting my above post and was unable to finish, which I will do now. In the last couple years I have heard from unofficial sources that Remington 22 rimfire ammo have improved lately. Older Remington ammo was quite good and am hoping the rumors are true of their improved quality. If and when 22 ammo will become available again, I intend to repeat my earlier tests.

It has been my personal observations from shooting lots
of different brands of .22LR ammo that the Remingtons,
especially the "golden bullets" are junk. Someone on this
Forum wrote once not long ago that they had tested these
rounds and pulled several bullets and found that they had
little to no priming compound or we're un-evenly primed
in the rim on the cases. I quit shooting remingtons long ago
and have had no problems with FTF's or FTE's or no ignition
on any of my .22's

Remington's stick in my mind as being the worst of the lot 25 years ago.

A quick thought I had was that the word was the last year or so the rem's were improving. My thoguht was did you check the date on this pack? With the ammo shortege like it is, a lot of back shelves are getting cleaned off, and a lot of older ammo is going out on the floor to be sold. We all know that the Rem was pretty poor for a large number of years, maybe this is a old box? Or maybe they are still making sub par 22 ammo.
