Default standard pressure 45 colt in 1920s colt revolver

hello guys ,
im on my way to the range with a bagful of new toys one of which is a colt new service smooth bore in very nice condition. question is : since i have not made any handloads yet ,would it be ok to try it out with some american eagle 45 colt 240 gr sjsp?
the smooth bore barrel just seems thin... no choke though so ill probably try what do you guys say?

The first half of the answer is the ammo - Federal lists this load as 225 gr at 860 fps, so in a mechanically sound New Service that is no problem.

Now the bad news - is this legal to possess where you live?

Didn't they use this type of gun for aerial trick shooting "back in the day"?

It's perfectly safe to shoot standard pressure .45 Colt in a 1920's New Service - I do it in a 1912 New Service! Peak pressure is reached when the bullet is still in the cylinder; pressure is falling rapidly when the bullet is traveling down the barrel. I would think accuracy would be terrible in a smooth bore, though; the unstabilized bullet would tumble. You might try some .45 Colt shotshells. Sounds like fun.

I see you're from Canada, so I assume smooth bore pistols are legal there. Here in the U.S. they are classified under the National Firearms Act as "Any Other Weapon" and are subject to registration and a $5 tax.

Additionally, if that smooth bore was cut from a rifled .45 barrel, it will be ridiculously oversize, and accuracy will be nil.

haha hi guys, youre right accuracy was terrible with bullets tumbling even at 20 ft!
i couldnt find any shot shells for it, plan to load my own. dont have any 45 components yet.
this gun was used by john e. higgins (higginson ?) for ariel trick shooting in a travelling circus .-now some clown owns it
the other new service is quite accurate even at 100 years old it still puts em where you point it.
the smooth bore 45 on top 455 webley on the bottom
