Dont Pay High Ammo Prices.... Ammo coming soon
I have a friend that works for CCI. They have not been shipping much ammo for awhile and have actually rented 3 warehouses and have been stocking up like crazy. Well why would thy do this? Money of course. There physical yr ends the end of this month "March" and have a strait across 20% increase in there dealer prices. So I would bet this is what Federal might be doing as well As I have read something that they will be shipping next month to. So we will have to pay a little more for ammo but not these ridiculous prices.

20% is "a little more"?
OK compared to what ammo is going for now perhaps so but a 20% increase over standard prices before Sandy Hook is massive. I can't help but believe that ammo manufactures is using this time when any relief is looked at as a blessing coupled with a large amount of newer gun owners who have no memory of what ammo cost before to not complain.

So they have been stockpiling their ammo giving the illusion of a shortage so they can raise prices? I hope this isn't true

So basically you're saying that CCI are gougers. I think I'll just keep buying Winchester ammo at normal prices from Wally World.

i think all ammo prices have increased. I am sure they are getting supplies/stock back up to prevent another episode such as what we are experiencing now. If this is true I will be more than happy to pay a little more knowing we will not have to go through this craziness again. Also, once the madness is over, prices will drop some more as well.

Not true. This is an Internet rumor that's been debunked on several forums already.

The stockpiling of ammo by manufacturers to drive up the prices. If they wanted to raise prices, all they have to do is raise them, just like any other industry.
The "I have a friend" bit always makes me laugh.

A 20% increase would amount to less than 1 cent per round, assuming everyone was paying 4 or 5 cents per round prior to the madness. Not too terrible of an increase if it is true.

If it's posted on the Internet it must be true. Why, can you imagine the chaos that would result if people made things up? Or spread rumors? No, I'll continue to believe (1) the government is here to help us, (2) everything on the Internet is true, and (2) everyone is basically a good person.

For basic .22 LR maybe but what about .38,.357,9mm where the average is maybe .20 to .35 cents a round? So that box of .38's that used to cost me $15.00/50 will be $18.00 now....and that's not too terrible in your book? It is in mine...
There is not a great deal of things that comes right out of the gate with an immediate 20% increase.....at least I can't think of many.

That's why, with the exception of my carry ammo, all my centerfire ammo is hand loads.

I bought CCI 22lr today at 2 places. I got both a mini mag box and a 375 round box of CCI 22lr. Both were in shipments recived by Academy today. Guess your friend is pulling your leg.
I am seeing more 9mm, 40s&w and 45acp show up at my local Academys. There were even 4 federal 55gr FMJ 1,000 ROUND boxes of 223.
223 sold $449 and change.
Winchester 100 round value pack of 40s&w 165grain sold for $36.99
Blazer Brass 9mm 115grain sold for $13.99

You know that the government has also bought a huge amount of ammunition pre sandy hook and post as well right, so that just kinda adds to the shortage.

I heard on Fox News a week or so ago that the gum mint recently purchased over 6 billion (with a 'b') rounds. What in the world do they need that much for?

I found some .22lr CCI at academy today too. was $25 for 375, not too bad, I didn't get a chance to grab the 525 remington boxes as I was too far back in line but I brought a buddy to buy me an extra box so got 750 rounds total
today I was also able to trade 2 9mm boxes for 2 .40 which I thought was a good deal as 9mm is cheaper. I traded a box of federal and a box of remington UMC 9mm for 2 federal .40 boxes

I stopped at the LGS yesterday and the had a couple dozen boxes of CCI Mini mags on the shelf for 10.89 a box. There was no CCI ammo there when I stopped a week earlier. They also had Blazer 9mm, Blazer brass and a couple other brands not there a week earlier. They have a 1 box per caliber limit and have had this limit for about a month. Previously it was a 2 box limit. They have had at least some 22 and 9mm every time I stop. Unfortunately they are 30 miles away so I only can go every week or 2.

Add to the list:
1. "This info is something the gov't does not want you to know"
2. "Pass this to everyone in your address book"
3. "This is true as is has been verified by snopes.com"
I don't believe it either.

I bought over 4000 rounds of Remington 525 boxes for 18.00 a box right before the Connecticut disaster at Dicks. Haven't seen any since at any price. Now I won't shoot them until I know I can get more. I guess I can expect to see a lot higher prices forever if availability comes back at all.

This may be an unfortunate truth & possibly a dangerous one. The higher price of ammo may curb gun range & practice time for new gun owners.

My home range who does a bustling business renting guns and range time to New Yorkers recently suspended any 9mm rentals because ammo in unavailable...I haven't been to the range since December simply because I want to hang on to as much ammo as possible until such time that the market stabilizes.
My small impact on the market...ie Ammo sales, accessories, range time, new firearms x hundreds of thousands or even millions like myself is not driving the market or prices, Hoarders, profiteers and new firearms owners are and I see no end in immediate sight....apparently neither do manufactures .

A friend and owner of my LGS has been active in the shooting industry for quite a number of years. He attends multiple seminars every year and also has relationships with several large wholesalers and manufacturers.
The ammo industry fiscal year is in fact April first through March 31st. Ammo manufacturers normally don't ship a lot of product in the final quarter, meaning slow delivery in January through March.
All of his ammo suppliers have warned of a 10 to 20% increase across the board. Defensive ammo is supposed to go up the least from what his source said with shotgun ammo and rimfire going up the most.
His most recent distributor order list for ammo from his ATK supplier has prices that he says are "MUCH higher". He cited Federal 510 .40 grain Champion HV .22 LR. His cost last year was $17 per brick which he sold for $22. His cost for 2013 is $23.50 per brick in an order of 10,000 rounds or more. The man hasn't lied to me yet, so it looks like $25 to $30 per brick "cheap" .22 LR may be the new normal.

I'm not sure I buy this.
I live about 15 miles from Federal headquarters in Anoka, MN. Federal and CCI are both owned by ATK.
If one plant is too busy, work gets shipped back and forth. I'm told that by the many friends and neighbors who work there. They've been been working extra OT, 24/7 for several years now.
It costs money to rent a extra warehouse, have people there, ship to a that warehouse, off load the stuff, store it and then reload it and ship it again.
For tax purposes, inventory is just like cash. Every company I ever worked for did everything possible to ship as much stuff as they could at their current "fiscal" year end to make the numbers look good and keep their stock price up (which makes the shareholders happy and lets current management keep their jobs.)
Why didn't they just do a 20% price increase and ship the stuff?
Update. 4/14/13 Talked to three additional (other than before) Federal employees. They are not shipping to a warehouse and storing it for later sale. Everything being built is sold. They hear (and laugh at) all the rumors, too. The conspiracy rumors help keep their spirits up during the mandatory overtime...

So, I guess this is where the conspiracy theories start?
All the manufacturers are holding ammo in their warehouses?
All the gun makers too?
And the spare magazine makers?
Oh, don't forget that Homeland Security is buying up all the manufacturers are not storing in factory warehouses to use against us when the end is near.
Oh brother. . . .
(By the way, if they wanted to raise prices for ANY reason, they can do so NOW - there is no requirement that they wait.)

To bad Costco doesn't sell ammo. The mark-up on all their items is only around 15%.

The utility company Im building for right now does crazy things at the end of a fiscal year. Like throwing $500k worth of material away, literally, in the big rolloff dumpster so they have either a big tax write-off or dont have to pay taxes on it for another year. Big companies do crazy things to save/hide money, I wouldnt be surprised if any ammo or gun maker did the same thing.

I am stating an opinion...mine. an opinion I might add shared by more than a few on this particular tread as well as many others before it and I dare say possibly after. If you have the resources to pay whatever the market bears then I applaud you but It would seem to me that you Sir, are part of the problem instead of the solution.

Bob's right... quitcherbitchin'.
Ammo prices have always been cyclical. I still have the first box of Federal 125 Grain +P .38 Specials I bought in 1972. The price tag on the end of the box is $15.95. I can tell you for a fact that I worked alot harder in 1972 for $16 than I do today.

Natchez (a company that has not been price gouging) sent me a new April flyer, and their prices on all loaded ammo has gone up significantly compared to the March flyer...

Just last year or so the 5,000rd case of CCI Blazer 22lr ammo was $255 delivered. I wish I purchased more of it.

Like ammo is different from gas. In '73 there was a "shortage". Gas went from .25/gal to .75/gal. when it stabilized at .50, whew!. In '79 gas went from .50 to $1.50. when it stabilized at $1, whew. Gas was .84/gal as late as 1997 but went to $4 in the last "shortage". When it went back to $2.50 whew! Now we're at $3.50 gal. probably go to $5/gal by Memorial day. When it drops to $4.25 whew! Ammo had been relatively stable for at least 40 years. Box of 50 .22's were $.69 at R&S stores back in the middle 60's. I have Wally boxes (550) I paid $10 for maybe 5 years ago. They went to 19.89 just before the "madness" (shortage) hit. Now folks are getting $50-$100 for a Wally box. A 20% increase will put them at $24/550-whew! That's for this a-go-around. When Napoleon gets the EPA involved with "lead regulations", it'll be another a-go-around. Joe

I'm just glad that I reload. A few weeks ago I ran out of 45 Colt bullets. None were available anywhere I knew of, at any price. I got lucky and made the right phone calls at the right time, and now I have 2000 bullets. Those sources have since dried up again.
The only thing I can't reload is .22 rimfire. I still have maybe 1200 rounds of various types, and am not shooting it anymore until I can figure out where the market is heading. If .22 ammo becomes very expensive, that will remove the main reason that I like to shoot it.

Well, my friend and LGS owner received his 2013 spring price list from ATK which is Federal, American Eagle and CCI. The price increase is 21 percent across the board. This is higher than what he was told at the SHOT Show when the ATK rep said 10 to 20 % depending on product. Of course, even with the price increase, he can't get the ammo which has been ordered for many months.

I'm new at this post, but I have a question. I have a friend who lives very close to the Mexican border and frequently goes across to buy various things, and wondered if it's possible to buy ammo over there? Probably not is my guess.

Canada's shelves are full too.. 2 hrs away...absolutely no shortage.. but it is illegal to bring it back. There needs to be some changes. OK.. who's gonna run and for what office?

As the value of the dollar deteriorates with the Government trying to run the private sector, you can be sure the price of everything is going up and staying up. You get what you vote for!!

What manufacturers typically do
They want to DECREASE stock at the end of the fiscal year when the have to take inventory and pay taxes on it.

I hope your right but either way I would just be happy if ammo would be more available. I am tired of these prices and running all over town to only be able to get one or three boxes or whatever limit they set per customer.

Why is it illegal to bring ammo back from Canada?
