Default 44 Russian or nothing

I was looking on Midway for ammo to shoot in my 2 1/2 inch m629.

Usually I shoot 44 Special and sometimes 44 Mag.

Pretty much nothing available. Cheaperthandirt also had little or nothing.

But I checked 44 Russian on Midway and they had a few different loads at what passes for reasonable prices these days.

I bought a few boxes, but this is my first time ever with 44 Russian.

Anyone else use this cartridge in a 29 or 629?

It's interesting how the world had changed. A few years ago, the general advice was to stay with common rounds rather than the unusual cartridges as the common stuff was available anywhere.

Well my local gun store has a supply of 45 Schofield, but not a box of 9mm.

Dave

The .44 Russian is a fine round. Previous pistol rounds had used a "heel" bullet that made accuracy a casual thing. The .44 Russian was the first modern pistol cartridge using a inside lubricated bullet with a full caliber base. It had a well deserved reputation for accuracy. Shooting it in a .44 Special or .44 Magnum revolver should be a little like shooting .22 Shorts in a .22 LR revolver. If the bullet fit is good, on target results should be good. The other day I was so desperate to shoot my 18-3 that I bought 1,500 rds. of .22 Shorts and headed for the range. Very happily the .22 Shorts worked about as well as .22 LR ammo even out to 25 yds. Hopefully you will get the same results using the .44 Russian round.

The original loadings of the 44 Russian and 44 special were ballistic twins. The 44 Russian stuff being sold now is downloaded for SAAS and similar.

The Russian was a black powder round, and the Special began life as smokeless. The original smokeless powder was so poor it needed a bigger case to stay equivalent to the black powder.

I think they're cute. If I had the dough, I'd shoot 'em in my 629 in a heartbeat.
