I picked up some Shotgun Home defence ammo
It's for a 12ga pump a 20" smooth bore barrel with raised front and rear sights on a Remington 870.. I picked up some Winchester PDX1 12 Defender in a segmented rifled slug
12 ga 2 3/4" 1600 fps with a 1oz slug that supposed to break apart in 3 segments on impact.. I got two boxes of 10 rounds per box.. How is this stuff for home defence? It's a lot lighter then a regular deer slug.. Seems like it would be a safe choice for home defence.. What do you guys think? Thanks! George

I have some PDX-1 with the slug and the 3 00 Buck pellets in it and the stuff is devastating. It will do just fine for HD.

Thank you for the reply. I got the PDX1 12 Slug because I already have some 00 and 000 buck shot. I wanted a better defence round that would be safer and harder hitting then
7 1/2 bird shot too..Yet be as safe as it can be for anything out side my house.. Neighbors are at least 400 feet away only one house others are 800 to at least 1000 feet away with thick woods in between.. This slug looks hollow inside so it should fragment fast I would think.. Winchester does make a few types. I almost got the one with the rubber slug with 3 bearings ..Guessing recoil should be somewhat light with only a 1 once slug, Should be ok for the wife to handle too if that's the case.. George

FWIW, there is a YouTube posting alleging that the patterning of this load in 12 gauge is very erratic and wide, much wider than standard 00 Buck. FWIW

Sarge and I have two totally different loads in this round.. Mine is one rifled slugs that FRAGMENTS IN THREE PICES AND WEIGHS 1OZ PDX1-12. I believe Sarge has the load that has a large center projectile I Think rubber or polymer with 3 large ball bearings that come out at once. I think but am not sure of as being PDX1-10.. I have see very good ballistics test shots with his load.. Winchester makes a few different defence loads for shotguns. I never used any.. George

Yep i also have plenty of 12ga 00 buckshot for her. Just wanted to have a load on hand that is a little more forgiving to what may be behind the intruder or out side of the house.. This load is light with a lot of shock value to it as it open up to a golf ball size projectile upon impact so some say.. Suppose to be a good safe home defence load.. Nice set up! What mag extender are you running with.. Do you need to change out the mag spring to run it?george

Put a pair of good electronic hearing protectors with that scatter gun. If you ever have to use it indoors, you'll be glad your ears aren't bleeding afterwards, when you're cleaning up entrails and bits of spine.

Mine is a Mossey 500 Persuader, 20" bbl...Nothing done other than putting on a Knox recoil reducing stock...That's a $125 add on....

George9: A reasonable test would be whatever YOUR walls are composed of, drywall/insulation/out door board/siding? Shoot it from ( ) ft, whatever the longest length you have in your house and see what it does if you miss and put 2 - 1 gallon bags of water in front of YOUR wall and try it. It will not be the absolute answer since it is only 2 shots, but you will have an idea of what it does with YOUR wall. Since otherwise your betting it will break up based on a total unknown. I shot 2 deer each at 233 yds, same gun, 308 165 gr nosler ballistic tip, It went through heart/lung of one deer, through lungs and tore the pericardium of the second. this occurred on different days. Both deer ran, were recovered, on dressing them I saw that neither bullet had opened, the other 98 rds were used for practice. I am not saying they are "bad" rounds, just that they did not do what was advertised. So it is just best to see for yourself. Disclaimer-- I do not hate Nosler, I use something else that has worked well for me every time. Be Safe,

vipermp, Thank you that's a good idea.. My walls in my home are 1/2" drywall with 3 1/2" insulation in all walls even between the rooms as the people who built our house used it for a ski loge and wanted to heat all rooms individually. On the out side I have 3/4" all weather particle type board the 1" styrofoam board and vinyl siding.. As far as the 12 ga round goes it's hard to explain but if you looked at a coffee cup and broke off the handle the slug is hollow on it's inside like that with three slots that suppose to open up on impact at short or long range so they say with the bottom of the cup being the noes of the slug.. I would have no use for this type of round beyond say 25 feet or so.. But I like your idea.. I don't think my local range will go for a test like that even though it's a out door range..I'll have to set something like that up in the woods somplace.. Thank you! George

Some other loads I like for HD are Hornady Critical Defense 00 Buck with Versi-tite wad. It paterns very well. The Federal 00 Buck with Flight Control wad is great as well. Both of these are the tightest 00 Buck rounds I have seen on the market.

I always like to test out the penetration of new ammo that is going to used indoors !! Not all shots hit the target, some times............................
Most settle on the old Buck shot load but these new loads might be the up and coming thing? New tech and metals are changing for the better every day.
