Default Frustration with Cabela's ammo policy for Illinois residents

This is the third time this has happened.

Gunbot.net indicated Cabela's had some 9 mm ammo at a decent price. I go to their website and am able to "put the ammo in my cart". Go to checkout and a note states that since I live in Illinois, I must place the order by phone through their gun dept. Now, I should note that the first time I tried placing an order, they required a copy of my FOID and IL driver's license. So, I emailed that to them and they let me know that that info is now on record with them and I wouldn't have to re-submit it (good for a year as I recall).

So, today when I see ammo available @ Cabela's, I call the #800 and get the "please hold music" for several minutes. The sales rep finally comes on and takes my order (five box limit) and I'm getting excited thinking I'll finally score some ammo. Then...she says she is sending my order over to the "gun dept" for completion. (It's my understanding from previous discussions w/Cabela's reps that only the gun dept. has access to the FOID records.) The clerk there looks at the order and then says he's sorry, but the ammo has already sold out.

I asked if there was a supervisor I could talk with and the clerk said he would forward on my complaint. Right!

All I'm wanting is an equal chance to score some ammo. By the time I'm done jumping through the hoops with Cabela's , it is always sold out. I've had no problems ordering through PSA or Ammunition Depot. Just go online, place the order, email a copy of my FOID and all is good.

Sorry for the rant...just needed to vent.

The rant should against the politicians in your state that put you in the situation you are in. Cabela's is complying with Illinois law to the best of their ability.

I live in Connecticut and since they signed the new guns laws a month or so ago, I haven't seen ANY ammo at the many local Walmarts. I check the app many times a day and it hasn't changed since. I will even go inside some of the stores hoping the app was wrong, but nothing. I wonder if Walmart corporate told them not to send any more ammo to CT.

Well, until we can get Chicago in it's own separate state, the political situation is unlikely to change.

I don't think so.

As stated in my original post, other online merchants are able to comply with Illinois law without all the hassles and hoops to jump through.

just cut Chicago off of Illinois, let it float out in the lake and they can be their own country.

No way. We already have Detroit.

I'll stick to my original post about Cabela's obeying the law to the best of their ability as they see it.

I'll agree they are probably being over cautious, but it is their business to run the way they see fit.

I agree. Your battle is at the ballot box and not with Cabelas.

I have started regarding states in two categories, "Free States" and "Socialist Republics".

Trust me...my legislators have heard from me on a number of gun related issues...and, I do vote.

Actually, the solution to my concern with Cabela's is quite simple now that I've thought about it. If they don't want my business, fine! Thanks to a tip from another thread in this forum yesterday, I was able to score some ammo from another online vendor. Simply by adding the ammo to my cart and sending a copy of my FOID.

My problem, as an illinois resident, was different. Last time I tried to order in stock on the phone I was told that Cabelas needed to get confirmation back from state police that my FOID card was approved. The FOID is on file with them and I never previously had a problem, just a few minute delay until someone checked their records. Basically the same procedure now as if buying a gun. I am unaware of any illinois law changes that caused this. They would not allocate anything to me until approval was received so everything would simply be gone.

Illinois is one of the worse. My CCW instructor warned me to never carry traveling through ILL... Big trouble! Even out of state police are NOT allowed to bring their guns. They must be locked up in the car/truck.

Unloaded and stored. One of my clubs in suburbs of Chicago requires not only encasing but either trigger locks or case lock because of local rules/enforcement interpretation of town police. There is no point in being a test case after some range time.
