Ammo - What to do...
After shooting both 9mm and .40, I've decided to move forward with the .40. My question to all of you is this: Do I keep the 9mm ammo I have or sell it now? And I'm not talking just a few boxes...

Doesnt matter. Whatever you do is fine.
Sell and maybe make a few $$ but a little later you end up picking up a 9 and now you have to buy it again. Dont sell, youre still out the $$ you spent but later it may come in handy.
Ive done both and usually regret selling later when i for whatever reason decide to get back into that cal.

You can sell it to me! Seriously I would keep it. You never know if you will buy another 9MM or not and I don't believe that since the prices have gone up that the ammo. companies will lower them much. They have seen that we are willing to pay anything to get it. You can keep ammo. for many years just store it properly.

Agreed... keep it till later... As long as it is stored properly, as previously mentioned, it is no different (in my opinion) than gold or silver.
9mm especially being such a popular and common round!

It'll never be worth more. If you're certain you'll not need it, put it back in circulation!

Funny, I went the other way. Before the drought, the price difference made me cringe every time i bought .40 especially when I looked at the 9mm options for $5 less per 50.
Then I went and bought a few .45s and then thought, you know .40 ain't so bad.
I still don't own .40 anymore, but have almost bought one when I couldn't find 9mm and places still had .40 on the shelf.
My opinion, keep it. You may come across a killer deal on a 9mm down the road or need to teach someone new on less expensive ammo.
I will mention that recently I found a few 100 rd boxes of federal .40 and traded it for partial payment of a gun at a gun show. I got more in trade than what I spent on it. (Spent $75, got $100 credit toward a pistol). You could make a killing on a trade.

I've made this mistake before myself. Unless you have a storage problem hang onto the 9mm, you may decide to get another one down the road and if not you can always sell it.

What .40 did you decide to buy?
Just hard to imagine life without a Glock 19 in the rotation.

Thanks for all the feedback. Been racking my brain trying to decide what to do.

I've had four various M&P9's and am now down to one. Feel confident I can part with "some" of the ammo and still have enough for the range.

Got a sweet deal on an M&P40 Pro Series and also got a Shield 40 (and I am considering getting a 9 barrel for it)

Countryfirst:
I also vote for keeping the ammo.
By the way, you are aware that if you have a M&P .40S&W caliber, you can buy the 9mm barrel (factory or after-market) and 9mm magazines and by changing to the correct caliber barrel and magazines, shoot either 9mm or .40S&W out of the same pistol - correct?
You can make the transition from larger caliber, to smaller caliber, but not the other way around. Additionally, if you start with the .40S&W, you can buy a .357Sig barrel and also shoot .357Sig out of the same pistol (the .357Sig uses the same magazines as the .40S&W). Thus, you have the potential for being able to fire 3 different calinber bullets from the same pistol.
There are other gun manufactors that offer caliber conversions, but they are usually pricey and hard to come by. I wish S&W would come up with a .22LR conversion for the M&P - I bet they'd sell a couple of truckloads full without any problems.
Best of luck,
Dave

Thanks for the insight, Dave. The M&P9 I'm holding on to "was my first" with night sites from the factory so for now I'm holding on to for sentimental reasons. And while I did sell the other 9's, I've still got all the extra mags I bought for them. Going from .40 to 9mm is what I was planning to do with my Shield, but will maybe go with the full size instead. Great feedback. Thanks.

Man you got the perfect excuse to buy a 9mm handgun....but honey , I have all this ammo I can't let it go to waste. You never get by with just one gun, you need a 22, 38, 357 mag, 9mm, 40 S&W and 45 acp or colt or both...minimum.
Get a 9mm, don't let that ammo go to waste. Save your empties, they can be reloaded...another fun hobby.

I'm not getting rid of anything
I'm not getting rid of anything unless circumstances force me to. Having it is a lot easier than trying to find it during crisis situations.

If you do decide to keep it, (I would) don't 'advertise' that you have it. I see too much of this nowadays, folks crowing about what they have. At some point, somebody's gonna want 9mm and they may not be buyers...

I would not get rid of any ammo in this environment. If you're shot on 40 S&W ammo maybe you could trade some of the 9mm for 40 S&W ammo but I probably wouldn't sell any off without getting ammo in return.

I really do not understand your question. In post # 15 you said you were keeping your first M&P9, so if you have a small amount of 9mm ( 1-2000), keep it. If you have 10-15 K then trade it for 40 or whatever caliber you may need, since it makes no sense to pay elevated prices when you are storing lead not gold! I have not shot my 39-2 for 25 yrs but I still keep 500 Fed Hydroshock for it just in case. I shoot a suppressed glock 22, lone wolf barrel, Liberty Mystic, for quiet fun with 158gr fiocchi. Be Safe,

9mm
Everyone should own at least one 9mm. If you don't get one. Down the road who knows what caliber will or will not be available.
Have to be ready for ????? when it comes to firearms and the government.

viper md: Thank you for your 'like.'
I have one final thought on this matter, and I know I sound like a retired LEO. We LEOs have an expression: 'on the street.' I'm not putting any ammo 'on the street,' meaning that, somewhere along the line, a criminal might get his hands on it. And certainly not in bulk. If the ammo you sell is not going in someone's stash, or back to a LGS, it's going out there because he's selling it and you have no control as to whom it's going.
In NY, when a criminal gun would be impounded, the cops would say, "That's a gun that won't be used to kill a cop.' We tend to think like that. Personally, I couldn't handle it if my ammo would feloniously harm anyone. Why chance it?

I don't like having ammo for guns I don't have. But that's me. If you don't need the money or room I'd keep it. Better yet, give it to a friend.

Countryfirst, you did say you still have a 9mm. There is no reason then to sell off the ammo. you have if you still have a gun to use it in. Trust me you will eventually use all that you have and will have to buy more. If that is a couple of years down the road what will the prices be then? I made the mistake of selling off all of my 380 because I sold mine. Guess what I got from my wife for Christmas? A Ruger 380!! Now I cannot find 380 to use it. Keep it.

Have never done a lot with the 9- last I loaded any was 1989 Fast forward to the present-- my son down the street shoots a 9MM and my son who just reloacted to PA from Alaska and bought two sheilds just before he left. to top that off, I still have my 469, and spied a 639 at a gun show, NIB and snapped it up. So, I am back in the 9MM business. Have enough brass for all and then some as well. My Sig 250C has two barrels, the 40 & 357 Sig so I load for them as well, or will. Now if prices on the ammo go back down, fine, but we are not counting on. So, I would hang on to ANY ammo I had. JMHO

I think the new gun control will be ammo control.
I would keep it or do you have friends, I am a likable person.
I do like the 40, but already have a 9 that I like just as well.

Thanks all for the feedback. "tlay" was correct that I do still have a 9mm as it was my first M&P and sentimentally (rationally too) I'm not going to part with it. There will be enough lead for her and some of the rest I've offered to other members/friends at my shooting range.
