Default No honor among thieves?

I was just searching gunbroker for ammo, and I'm amazed at the greed of most of the sellers. Just because it's a seller's market doesn't mean that someone should be over-the-top about their prices. If we all stuck together as a shooting community, we could help each other out rather than rip each other off.
I'm not naive, but couldn't the sellers tone it down a bit?

Just paid $15 for steel cased .45 at WM today. Picked up brass cased 40sw for $18. I'd never buy ammo from GB unless dirt cheap...they can choke on it.

I've been having good luck with
In Stock .22LR Ammo Deals | Slickguns

tried gunbot, but this one post faster and has a bigger selection
I've been looking for 6 months and finally started scoring this last two weeks using this. Picked 2000rds of 22lr yesterday and 100 rds of 38 special and some 9mm. The prices are fair, its the shipping that gets you and there is usually a 1 box limit.
Cabelas has the best shipping at about 5 to 9 dollars. Hope this helps.

You don't buy ammo from Gun Broker......unless you want to keep the bullet shortage going. The "hoarders" clean the stock off the shelves each and every week from each and every store. Run home, put their goods on GB and wait for their prey. NO WAY would I buy ammo from Gun Broker!

Just wait it out.
Use an air rifle, potato gun or take up archery with a long bow. Maybe even checkers.

The only reason those fellers are selling it that high is because someone is buying it.

I'm all for those fellers making big $$$, and I'm all for them getting hung with it at high prices too- shows that we still have a free enterprise system.

After all, for 99% of people, including myself, ammo is a want, not a need. Especially vast quantities of it.
Don't get impatient, because, developing an effective stockpile is not acomplished in a fortnight- it takes years, a little at a time.

I've had about all of these thoughts run through my head too. On a couple of occasions I've run out of patience/restraint with the gougers and shot them a rather blunt note. It makes one feel better.

NO, I do not sell ammo on GB. If these people are so desperate to pay $50.00, and much more, for a $25.00 box of .22's on GB, that is their problem.
Do you have a Walmart shipment tracker that actually works?

Just a short follow up on Wall Mart purchases.

3 boxes of Winchester .22 100 rounds $7.27 each
3 boxes of CCI .22 100 rounds $7.27 each
2 boxes of Win. M-22 1,000 rounds per box $48.37 each .
3 boxes of CCI tactical .22 375 rounds $24.97 each

Gives you some idea how much the mark-up is on GB. of course it is the BIDDER responsible for paying the grossly inflated prices.

Side Note: In April-2012 the CCI was $5.79 per 100 round box when I bought 15 boxes.

That is who I purchased CCI 100 round boxes of .22 ammo for $5.79 each. Now they have the nerve to price the same ammo at $59.59 a box.
CTD are the finest example of CROOKS. I don't even open their catalog, straight to the trash on receipt.

Wouldn't matter if you read it, they don't publish ammo prices anyway

Check GB for what is selling. I see lots of ammo with no bids. If you are a member you can search completed auctions.

capitalism at work. supply is lower than demand, thus the higher prices... works that way with realestate too.

If you don't like the price don't buy it.In the meantime
don't complain about it. Also if someone has the means to
pay a price you don't want to pay,or cant pay, don't complain about
that ,either. Pete

If gas station "a" offers gas at $4 and gas station "b" offers gas at $50 I'm paying $4 and I suggest you do the same. You needn't bother complaining about the $50 guy, we can all read and those of us stupid enough to pay $50 deserve what we get.

Savvy?

I know what you mean. I have sold some ammo and asked for a little profit, but I have a friend that occasionally comes with me in the mornings when Academy Sports gets their shipment. He got a box of Rem. 50rd 9mm, and a 375rd box of cci 22lr, he is asking 35 bucks for the 9mm and 50 for the 22lr. I am shaking my head thinking he will never get that.

I've seen this and not just on ammo.

People are selling hi cap mags *not extended just 12-15rnd* for upwards of $100 a piece.

Saw a Taurus Pt92 in Horrid shape online for $500! :-o *I bought one in 95% a year ago for $322*.

Saw a Glock 30rnd 9mm for $129.95!!!!!.

Saw a 100rnd WWB 9mm.......$65!!!! *normaly barely over $20 at wally world as we all know*

People have no honor or class.

Myself. I sell it for the value and that alone. Sold my Gen4 Glock 23 For $475 at less than a week old, Could have asked $700 like everyone else, but i still have some class left to me ya know :-p

Don't forget the average Super Center WM costs taxpayers thousands of dollars yearly to help their employees get by with gov programs. It may just seem cheap, but why not? They can afford to sell cheap and buy cheap with their corporate buying power.

Played both sides. Got tired of chasing ammo and paid the high price when I needed it at GB. Waited in line at WM. Noticed they don't sell a lot of PD ammo for handguns any longer, but more plinking ammo, too.

I wouldn't call it greed if someone is having to do what they can to get by. I call it greed when people start trying to buy all the ammo coming in at a store behind the scenes to put on GB and make money they don't even need.

I just buy it when I find it. Walmart, Cabelas, KTP, anywhere. But I dont buy 10 boxes. 1 or 2 20-50rnd boxes every now and then. Enough to go to the range and have at least 100 of each caliber on hand. No hoarding here :-)

My son and I went to a gun show a few weeks ago. 22lr was offered at $50 a brick, primers at $60/1000. No one was buying. I need some primers and found one vendor who was selling primers and bullets at pre-panic prices. I bought from him and thanked him for not gouging. He said that he kept his prices low so that he would keep his customers. Well, he now has a new customer.

I understand where you are coming from, but you can not exactly blame the sellers of ammo. If everyone would just take a chill pill buying ammo, the price would come back down. Everyone has to go out and buy as much ammo as they can find at their local Walmart, wally world, etc and just keeps the demand through the roof. I used to go to the range 2-3 times a week before January 2013 and now have not been there since. I am glad I still have enough ammo for a little while, but even if I didn't, I would only buy enough to make sure my self defense weapon is loaded, other than that I will take up one of my other hobbies for the time being. People buying all the ammo right now is the problem, not the sellers. Yes, I would most enjoy going to the range again 2-3 times a week, but with the ammo price's the way it is, screw it... I am not rich and refuse to pay over 11 a box of 9mm or 16 a box of 45acp or 14 for a box of 38 special.

Eric

I have been watching this subject for quite a while. I have a Browning BAR .22, a Marlin 882 WMR .22 Magnum, and the one that everone has, Marlin Glenfield Model 60. I haven't shot as much ammo as some folks are talking about stocking up on in 50 years. I guess I'm out of the loop, as usual. I have an acquaintance who lives in Winston Salem, NC who cleans Walmart at every oportunity. He will never live long enough to shoot it all. Are these assault rifle look alikes eating up the ammo? Just curious. DLB

YES. Sorta. I just bought a Sig 522, the only assault look alike .22 in the safes. Otherwise, the .22 collection of about 15 or more include an Anschutz Bench Rest Rifle on the top end to a Chipmunk bolt action pistol at the very bottom. Several Rem. 40X, Win. 52's, T/C etc etc. So, yes, I do buy a lot of ammo, but only .22 RF, the other 2 dozen or so calibers are all reloaded. Even the Mill Surps for which I bought lots of ammo back when it was 10 the 15 cents a round. 8mm, 7.62X39, & 7.62X54R.

So yes, I am a 'hoarder,' but the 'hoard' gets shot.

Ammo is out there, I've chronicled my observations over here. 5 out of 6 days stock was available late morning to mid-afternoon.

The Ammo Shortage of 2013

My friends are very happy this weekend. Using NO apps, no message boards, and only my feet and a little effort, I have stocked them with 45 (1200 rds), 40 (900 rds), and 9 (1100 rds) at about 40, 30, and 25 cents per round respectively. They have done the same in the past.

Take the time you spend whining and go look. It's out there.

I fondly remember going on gun broker and buying bulk ammo. It was almost always cheaper than the big box stores and I could even find free shipping some of the time. Those were the days. My ammo levels are real good now 2000 rounds of 9, 1500 of 40, and about 400 rounds of 12 gauge. The only thing I'm having trouble getting is 357 mag at a good price. I'm not buying the hoarding, and I'm really not conviced it's the gougers. As long as there are people willing to pay $600 or even $400 for a 1000 round case of 9mm it's hard to tell when things are going to get back to even resembling normal. Now I'm just buying where I think I can find it, usually Wal Mart. Hasn't been too bad, just getting out of bed at 6 AM instead of 7 AM.

Saw 357 Magnum in our Walmart stores this week. Maybe some will get your direction!

Some of these big stores have plenty of buying power, ala Cabelas/Bass Pro. I figure if Walmart can sell ammo at low prices, these big stores could too, if they wanted. I understand they're after the big profits, but it seems to me that they would make more profits ( and higher customer loyalty) in the long run by selling more ammo at a lower price. I'm just sayin'.

How did I know this thread was about ammo! As far as big stores, Gander Mountain is the biggest gouger in my area - their methods will cost them much more in business income that the additional made off gouging ammo customers.... I cut up my GM credit card and handed it to a cashier last time I was there!

I think they all have contracts set up for a certain amount of time and a certain price. When it runs out they renegotiate. Walmart carries a big stick and although I don't like going there I do because I like to shoot and haven't started reloading yet. I've scored ammo in the last few days at BP, Cabela's and Walmart. WM continues to be cheaper but that might change with the next contracts. Who knows?

You are correct. And you can bet that WalMart suppliers are licking their chops waiting for those term contracts to end.

You think you're hearing whining NOW?

Wait'll WM catches up to the rest of the world!

Ammunition and reloading supplies will never return to pre-December 2012 prices.

My advice is to BE PREPARED and get in line for a reloading press now. When you find any viable pistol powder for $25 a pound, jump on it! If you find small pistol primers, either regular of magnum, for $40, jump on it! If you find bullets in your caliber for $25 , jump on it! Look in the classifieds for brass, pick up brass, beg, borrow or steal brass.

It'll not spoil, and you may need to be a bit patient. But you should get started NOW!

The only flaws I see in these arguments is that several here claim to be distributers/wholesalers and claim their wholesale price hasn't significantly jumped. Operations like Walmart get priced direct from the manufacturer and their price is typically better than the distributor/wholesaler that supplies your LGS because of volume. At worst it'll be the same. 2+2 says Walmart won't have any significant increase. In fact, they recently had a small increase in the last couple months so they may have already gone through another round with some (case in point, $20+ yesterday for Rem 525 .22LR is higher than in May)

No doubt there's some gouging still going on. I've seen people selling old yellow box Norinco 5.56 ammo at $15-19 a box/20. That stuff hasn't been imported since '94 and was going for $1.99 prior to the ban on Chinese ammo.

In the small , independent gunshops though , I think product/cash flow might have a lot to do with it. If a shop normally sells 500 boxes a week at $2-3 profit per box , and now they have no or very little ammo to sell , they have to make money to pay the bills any way they can.

Add that to the overall bad shape of the economy , , and well , ,

So is it selling at that price or just being offered for sale?

If it's not selling, then the price is too high.

If it's selling, it's worth it to someone and they are voluntarily paying that much. No gouging there.

Willing seller and willing buyer = capitalism at it's finest.

As much as I love Gunbroker, I'm not sure I would use it as a reliable indicator for cost.

Take this into account: most of the folks paying high dollar for ammunition appear new to the site. A large majority have a NR rating or very low completed auction count. Start checking the join dates on some of these folks. 99% are within the last 6-8 months. I hate to say it, but they don't know any better. I wouldn't exactly call them "experienced" Gunbroker purchasers. GB used to be a great place to get a good price. Not so much anymore.

Technology has a large part to play. Just like there are those here (and on other boards) that are just slobbering all over themselves about how GREAT Walmart's app is to find ammunition, GB allows those with little experience but the money to spend, access to all kinds of overpriced ammo. Now the guy who is just getting into guns/shooting has all this ammo in front of him to purchase. Since he has never paid less than what he is paying now, he knows no better.

You know, I try sooo hard not to post on ammunition threads. I am so utterly tired of hearing the complaining. I stocked up.....years ago. And guess what? I'm still ticked about prices.....but I figured years ago something like this would happen. How could you not? If you have any common sense, you should have seen this coming.

Will prices go back down? Probably not. I work multiple extra and side jobs to purchase what I need. Maybe if everyone put all the effort they put into crying and complaining about the ammo situation into a second job, they would have the money to actually BUY ammunition.

Those without the experience and pay too much for ammo are in many ways similar to those without the history/knowledge/intelligence and vote!
