model 686 ammo
I have a S&W model 686 357 Magnum, can a shoot 38 short ammo what other ammo can it handle

It'll handle 38 short Colt, 38 long Colt, 38 Special and 357 magnum ammo with no problem at all.
It won't take 38 S&W ammo.

.38 Colt has a bullet diam. of 0.375" & not 0.357" as it was used originally in converted cap 'n balls and takes heel base bullets.

If you're asking about that weird Magtech 38 Special short ammo on Midway, yes, you can shoot that in your M686.
