If you need to make lots of loud noises, there is 12 gauge available, and in a good variety of loads. Shooting, statistically, is a luxury. Especially handguns. My handguns have sat quietly with no complaints for a few months now, and I now see ammo starting to reappear. Life went on, even with out shooting. Based on a MN murder rate of 1.4/100,000, I can expect to need my weapon for defense once every 100,000 years. I was able to buy some good imported beer and take my wife out to dinner a few times. Nobody broke into my home or assaulted me in the street. Contrary to what you read in the papers and see on TV, we are very safe in our homes and on the streets.

Last week, my local LGS had a full counter of .45, the remnants of a case of 9mm self defense loads, and I even scored three boxes of .22 (I can post photos, for those who no longer remember what .22 looks like). Ammo for the evil black rifle is appearing, and my gun range is still in business.

Prices will come down some, but there are a lot more people buying ammo, and a lot more are shooting the semiauto, with its propensity for dumping full magazines in seconds. Unless our foreign wars stop or more manufacturing capacity is built, we can expect prices to stay up for a while.

Anyone buying into this high priced folly is perpetuating the problem. Quit buying overpriced ammo and the price will go down. It's basic economics supply and demand.::

Did you stop payments on your homeowners insurance as well? After all, the chances of fire, flood or burglary being 1:2000 or so means that you will be dead a couple of millennia before it would be required.

What about auto insurance? You won't need it until the year 2525 or there about.

Recreational shooting has indeed become a luxury for some. But please do not replace it with some misguided sense of security.

This morning while out and about, avoiding the Mrs SDog honey-do list, I frequented a coffee shop, 2 Walmart stores, a greasy spoon diner, a Cabelas, 2 more Walmart stores, and a Bass Pro. In each establishment, I found for purchase something I wanted. It went like this. Coffee black, 22LR, 40SW, sausage gravy biscuits with grits, W231, 45ACP, 9MM, large pistol primers.

That means I had 100% success in entering a retail establishment and getting something I needed. According to doctrine/theory, there is no shortage

I'm still finding bulk 22 at 5 cents a round and the better quality stuff at 7-10 cents a round,but I'm not actively searching for it,as that's still a waste of time.
Center fire,I've been reloading for 30 years and learned to stock up long ago.
People are buying ammo when they see it for a "reasonable" price now,rather than trying to hunt it down when they need it.Theres lots of ammo about,it's sitting in closets rather than on store shelves.Thats the only difference.

dealers will have to adjust prices to sell at prices that he gets the buyer traffic he wants in his store.

sure there are buyers who will pay extreme high prices and the dealers will make a killer profit on that sale- but eventually those buyers will dry up or wise-up

the free market is like nature - it will take care of itself - if we can keep it free - we'll see what happens to places like CTD

You may be right. I spent yesterday and today in the basement and I can state without fear of contradiction that there is zero shortage of 9mm in this household.

Ammo box shortages however, are another subject entirely!

(The cost for a couple K of 124 grain hollow points worked out to about $0.13 per round.)

Ammo is HEAVY and BULKY.

There is only so much you can hoard until you go, "Uh-oh... what was I thinking?"

I guess if you think you can flip it real fast (and you TIME is worth next-to-nothing), it makes sense to grab a whole bunch and try to make a few dollars.

The ones who still have it stashed under their twin bed in the trailer, have gotta to be about ready to check themselves in about now.

Stock-ahead for what you will ACTUALLY USE for three years. No more. No less. Beyond that, you're gonna end up stuck with it for sure. For those of you who live in a hole, and who are prepared to be buried with it, please disregard my remarks.

Barring the end of times, I plan on having at least enough to last until I'm 78, which is 20 years from now. And since I shoot about 4000 rounds a year, that's a lot of ammo!

Just bought a remington umc bulk pack of 45acp (250 rounds) for 99.99 +tax, thats apprx 40cent per round, got it at academy sports in augusta georgia, they had plenty if anybody is in the area, they will however only let you buy one box per handgun caliber 3 box limit total, no 22 of any sort.

Just got this lovely 500 round UMC bulk pack of .45's at Cabelas for $199+tax!

USING, Old, Cheap, On-Hand Components.

Compared to others ON THE HUNT, I'm just amazed at the time and GASOLINE I've saved by a little forethought.

I celebrated Independence Day by loading 1000 rounds of 9mm.

While I stand with those who had the foresight to stock up, I applaud those who, if they do not have what they consider an adequate stash ("adequate" as defined by them, not someone else) are doing what it takes to get some.

Be it by reloading, standing in line, buying on the secondary market, swapping, or bartering - it's all good!

And to those who have a surplus of ammunition (again, "surplus" as defined by the individual), I stand by those who sell it for the market price. And I do mean the price that the market deems acceptable.

To those who scream "unfair",

To those who make fun of folks who are waiting for the stores to open or are hanging around waiting for stock to arrive,

To those who say "I won't wait 10 minutes, much less 7 hours for ammunition"

To those attempt to shame others for selling ammunition at it's TRUE VALUE because they don't want to pay that amount,

To those who say that those who are stocking ammunition are somehow creating the problem (I'll never figure that one out),

Well, shame me all you want. I'm not getting out of bed before the crack of 9:00, nor am I driving to WallyWorld and fighting the women in Jammies and flip flops. And I'm not standing in line. Its just not in the cards.

My wife and I went to a flea market today. There were several sellers of ammo. Its in the new style boxes and I couldn't identify it as WalMart stuff. It was just a box and it had magic marker prices written in. Because it was the most interesting stuff at the place, I took some time and looked. The bulk 22s were 325s and the guy wanted $40 for those. The other sellers had centerfire rifle ammo for $30 for a box of 20. All calibers. Seems like they got together and agreed on the price.

Guess I need to go look in my reloading room and see my component hoard. Yeah, I call it that now. Its more than I can load at one sitting or shoot in an afternoon. Means I'm one of those bad guys that has somehow caused this mess. Even before it started. If I'd left all those bullets and primers on the shelf, they'd still be there when you just in time guys wanted it. I'm still causing you folks trouble, too. Last spring I wanted some powder. So did I buy a 1# jug? Nope, I bought an 8#er. Last fall, before the nonsense started, I thought I was short on Bullseye. I was wrong as usual. I had about 6# of an old 8# jug left. I'm old and forgot. I've offered to give some to my one son, but he has to come get it. So much effort required. And bring his own jug!

So what I take from this is I'm not willing to pay $1.50 a round for .30-06 or .270 ammo. I'm amused at the walmart shoppers, but I get my prescriptions in 90 day lots. That's often enough for me. Next time I go, I'll look at their ammo shelves. But it won't be early morning or Friday afternoons. My nervous system won't allow it. Nor will I stand in line to buy stuff I've already got a hoard of. I'll leave that chore to you guys who didn't prepare.

I guess I don't get the whole "Blame" part. Most of these ammo threads blame this guy or that guy. What is it in people that makes them feel the need to point fingers?

Does that make ammunition cheaper or more plentiful? Only one thing does that - put your nose to the grindstone and get to work.

Assigning blame most certainly does not make the blamer feel any better. If it did, they would exude a sense of satisfaction and in reading the comments of those assigning blame? Man, do they appear to be anything but satisfied.

Unless having something to complain about is an end unto itself.

Your original post makes no sense whatsoever. You need to point the finger at the hoarders, capitalists, LGS owners and chicken littles that snapped up every round they could. Preparation is the key when this all blows over which it will slowly build up a supply.

There is one and only one person that the person with no ammo has to blame. Go to the bathroom and look in a mirror.

I think I look dang good when I look in the mirror and I have a closet full of ammo too.
