.22LR ammo available at Academy's, but there's a kicker...
Went shopping at the local Academy's last night for camping gear for the kids. As you enter the store, the Customer Service counter is immediately to your right, and this is where they stock their available "popular" calibers of ammo such as: .22LR, .380ACP, 9mm, .40ACP, .45ACP, 5.56mm/.223, 7.62mm/.308, etc. I couldn't believe it, but there was a pretty nice collection of American Eagle .22LR ammo in the 50 round box (maybe 50 boxes, total). Price was excellent at $2.19/box + tax ($2.37 OTD), which means the ammo is running about 5 cents/round. Not bad, not bad at all. The last time I was at Academy's, you could buy up to 3 (non-bulk pack) boxes of "popular ammo" at a time. I figured I could buy 3 boxes (150 rounds) of the American Eagle and have some fun with my Model 34 that doesn't get shot enough. Here's the kicker - at least for me - Academy's changed their limit to 1 box/per peson/per day of any caliber, 3 boxes total. Which means they would only sell me 1 each, 50 round box of .22LR ammo. I don't know about you guys, but that just isn't a sufficient enough quantity for me of .22LR ammo for a range session, and so I just left it, and I'll rely on my existing stock of .22LR ammo for my next range session. I can somewhat see limiting center fire ammo to 1 box/per person, but not .22LR. I don't know, what do ya'll think?
Regards,
Dave

likely the limit is the only reason there was any there for you to buy at all. I LGS limits to 2 boxes of pistol ammo, but no limit on rifle ammo. He considers .22 to be rifle ammo, he is usually out of it. Ed

Buy the one, then buy one again. Go to the parking lot and put on disguises... It will be fun.

When did they start putting American Eagle in a 50-round box? They were 40-rounds, six or seven years ago.

Alpo and Ken158: I'm near-sighted as all get out, and the ammo was over the counter from me. It looked like a 50-round sized box of .22LR ammo, so I assumed that's what it was. I wasn't aware that American Eagle sold 40 rounds/box as I haven't bought anything less than a 100 rounds/box of .22Lr ammo in over 30 years (except rat shot). So, it is entirely possible both of you are correct. If so, sorry for my error, and it makes me feel even better for leaving my 1 allowable box of ammo behind.

Dave

Picked up my three boxes this morning. A 325 rd box of Federal .22LR, Target Grade Performance $17.99, a 20 rd box of Monarch .223 $5.99 (it looks like Tulammo) and a 50 rd box of Monarch .45ACP $18.99, brass case, good looking ammo. I really just wanted the .22 ammo, but I figured since it was a three box allowance I'd go ahead and get a couple boxes of something else since it was there. I found the ammo by the front registers purely by accident. I just happened to see them as I was walking out the door. I think I'll go back this evening and see if I can pick up any more.

After about 15-20 mins shooting .22 LR gets rather boooooring to me personally not even offended about this .22 LR shortage or skyrocketing prices.

22's
The gun shops around here are selling two box's a day and I go by two shops on the way to the range, so I make two stops, most of the time I get Rem or CCI, but a few times they have had American Eagle and they were 40 round box's, but I noticed tonight Midway has them in stock in a 50 round box, I think it was 10 box's for about 20 bucks.

Really? I've had everything but a 22 until recently and I don't know why I didn't buy one sooner. I could leave most of my other stuff at home. I enjoy practicing fundamentals with ever smaller targets, gumballs on golf tees and such.
But now it's cheaper shooting my own reloads out of my 45

When I bought the fiance's ar15 I told the guy at the counter here in alabama that I was just going to have her come inside from out in the car and buy a couple more boxes. I said I reload my own and this is only so she can shoot the new rifle until I start working on loads and that I'm not going to sell it on FB.
he loaded up 3 more boxes...

Thats been the policy at my local Academy since late Jan. early Feb. time frame. Its a PITA policy but it does allow for more customers to get some ammo. Also remember that ammo comes in boxes up to 1,000 rounds and Academy at times do get bulk ammo in for sale. Granted you need to show up early enough to be one of the first ones in line when the store opens to have an opportunity to purchase but thats the price you have to pay now if you want ammo.
Lately though fewer people are showing up and their ammo deliverys are a little larger. The 22lr situation seems to be better here then in other areas. We seem to get 22lr twice a week. Sometimes its the Holy Grail of 22lr which is the 1600 count cans of CCI and sometimes its just the 40 round boxes of AE. Usually though its 525 count boxes of Remington and Winchester along with 325 count boxes of the Federal Auto Match.
Oh the .308 ammo no longer is limited to just one box and there is talk that the 223/556 1 box sale limit may be removed too. One can only hope.

That's how I felt about it 25-30 years ago until I bought an old Ruger a few months ago.

American Eagle has been available in two different loadings with different package sizes for quite a while. The copper plated 38gr hollow points came in a 40 rd box but the 40gr lead round nose is packaged in a 50 rd box. The shop I used to work for sold a lot of both. The per-box price was usually the same, just fewer shells in the HP boxes.
