"Cowboy" ammo is very lightly loaded for reduced recoil. We used to call them "powder puff" loads, but since "Cowboy" action shooting came about, they now have a rough and tumble name.

Also dirtier requiring more cleanup than copper jacketed ammo.

Generally loads that are like what they used in the old days
except black powder is not needed but can be used.
The standard CB 38 special 158 lead flat nose bullet out of a Colt runs around 800 fps.
Revolver, rifle and shotguns are used in the CB sport shoots at usually short distances.
Some factory loads use black powder some smokeless but all will be safe in weapons in good shape.

I don't think calling them "powder puff" loads would project the image most cowboy action shooters want.
I haven't noticed cowboy loads to be any dirtier than other loads -- not the smokeless powder ones that is.
Black powder loads are another issue.

and may the wind be at your back !!
It has never took on here in Nevada like other places but
the old lever 12 Ga and Colts start out at a pretty good price tag and the rifles just add to the cash flow.................
and you got to get some "Rags" big ol hat and boots plus a "nick name".
A sport you either love or hate...........like wax bullet "Fast Draw".
