Default 8 Months in and what do we have

Here we are 8 months into this mess and shortages still exist here and there. I can say in my area the shortage is all but over so to speak. Granted there is still not enough 22lr to satisfy the demand but if one is willing to be there when the store is opened they will get it if it comes in.

An example was this morning when Academy had 25 Federal Auto Match 325 count boxes available. Granted a small amount but everyone who showed up this morning wanting 22lr got it. They also had bulk 9mm,40cal. and 223/556, In fact my local Academy has so much 223/556 that they don't have the room to put it out.

The sad thing is as supply gets better the prices continue to rise.

Yeah, this whole mess showed the ammunition dealers that America is willing to pay more than they have been.

But by and large, the increase hasn't been any more, percentage-wise, than groceries.

Which is a whole 'nother rant entirely!

Unfortunately the shortages still exist in reloading components. We have never had a total drought of primers here in the great nation of Texas like others have reported, but powder and bullets, particularly jacketed bullets are scarce. On-line sources have been dry as well. It is good to hear that the assembled ammunition is beginning to appear - let us hope components are not too far behind.

Not to brag (maybe a little), but all is well on the reloading front in Ohio.

I guess it makes up having to live in Ohio!

Powder Valley has powder Powder Valley, Inc. as well as Mid-South Shooters Winchester and Hodgdon Smokeless Gun Powder - Reloading Powder | Midsouth Shooters Supply

Through all this I've never been unable to find components. Not always the components that would be my first choice, but acceptable alternatives. For example, I prefer W-231 for 9mm loads, when I got down to 2# left I couldn't find any so I bought 8# of Titegroup which will give me comparable loads with a bit less powder. I would have preferred the 231 (probably because I've used it for so long) but I can adapt.

LadyT: Great you have ammo in TX, in southern Nevada, the situation is poor. Can't remember seeing 9mm ball (I know you use this in quantity) at any price. Same with .22RF... Oh wait! A LGS nearby had 50 rd boxes of LR at $11.95.

Plenty of 12 ga slug/buck available at good $, both US and Spanish (I believe) Rio/Royal mfg. .38 burn-up ball (remember me?) is now at $18-19 per box of 50 at the LGS. Can't speak about ammo I don't use, but ammo availability in the Vegas valley is vestigial, as I wrote in another thread today. We're nowhere here. Good shooting!

I have about 3000 rounds of 9mm (300 are JHP), 1200 rounds of 223/5.56 (150 are JSP, JHP) and 150 rounds of 20 gauge shotgun shell (buckshot, birdshot, slug). I have enough for the moment!

I will stop buying now! I did spend quite a bit (more than reasonably priced), as most of mine are either from Brazil, South Korea, Hungary, Switzerland (super quality), Italy, Sweden (super quality), Russia, Czech, Serbia and even Finland (super quality). There are simply not enough when there is a panic run on ammo! (I hardly find any domestic ammo such as Remington, Hornady and Federal. I especially love the quality of ammo made by ATK (Federal, American Eagle, Speer and Blazer)

Good thing I don't need any. I would like a pound or 2 of medium rifle powder (RL15, Varget, AR Comp.. so on) and to experiment with others like cfe223, but I can wait. I have 5lbs of rifle and 15lbs of pistol/shotgun powder left, 15k+ primers and 6k bullets and 75lbs of lead shot. Took me years to accumulate on a small budget.

Its funny the main reason I bought a 22lr last Nov was so I can save money shooting, but here in SoCal people are paying 1 to 2 times more than it costs me to load 45 auto.

You know I don't want to believe in conspiracy theories but we are now 8 months in and ammo is still short and priced excessively high. As for 22lr I believe the major driver to be the wider range of firearm options chambered in 22lr along with the AR clones in 22lr. This alone is enough to drive the shortage of 22lr but add in new shooters and you have a shortage. yet after 8 months supply is still hit or miss.

I live in Central Ohio and I can't get jacketed bullets for 357. No shortage of anything shotgun. 22lr is never available when I hit the stores. Since I work days, that means I can't camp out at the store waiting.
