Default Sellier and Bellot

Rem oil or ammo?

I bought some .25acp a while back and we blew through a box at the range today goofing off. Nearing the end of the box my .25 started lagging and not feeding a round once in a while.

I thought my gun was just dry because its RARELY fired. It is a backup truck emergency style gun that takes a lot of element abuse. From the heat and cold to being carried in dry pockets.

Anyway the gun was not dry, but it was FILTHIER THAN ANY GUN I have ever cleaned. I noticed after one shot the entire magazine of ammo in the gun was filthy, you could take out a round and write your name with the round.

This ammo plugged up the .25 so bad it took 1/4 a can of cleaner to spray it out. This ammo was really dirty when fired. Never seen anything like it. It seemed to react to the Rem oil and created a thin tar like substance that was sticky and nasty.

Anyone seen this?

DR

Drinva;
Yes, I have. I bought a 1000 rounds of S&B in 9mm and tried to feed it through my Belgian made Browning Hi Power. What an absolute mess after just ten rounds. I wound up giving at least 500 round away free. Not quite sure what they use for powder but the stuff I got was terrible. Plus there were quite a few FT feeds and eject. My guess is that they do not have very tight quality control on their merchandise.I guess in the end we get what we pay for.......

I'm gonna' say it's the Rem oil. I've used S&B ammo in several calibers, including the 25 acp and haven't noticed it to be any more dirty than other makers.
I think Rem Oil has went the way of WD-40 as far as what folks use on guns these days. There's a lot better options to clean and lube.

It could be a more recent problem. Some years back I fired LOTS of S&B 9mm and .38 Special with nothing unusual happening. Maybe the propellant they use in .25?

S&B has been around forever, and I'd assume they know as much about ammunition manufacturing as anyone in the world.

I should have taken a few pictures. What got me was I loaded a full mag with clean new pristine ammo, fired ONE ROUND and the gun didnt load the next, so I popped out the mag and the entire magazine only missing one round was filthy! The ammo looked 50 years old due to the powder fired from one round. The ammo and mag didnt have rem oil on them.

I've used Seller & Bellot in different calibers of ammo in my years of shooting. The only problem I've noticed is the red varnish in the gun from their primer and bullet sealant when I clean it afterwards. Otherwise, it is good shooting ammo.

I've fired hundreds of S&B 9mm ammo and only had a problem with my Sig p250, The rounds seemed "tacky" and the gun had a FTE every 3 rounds so I emailed their customer service contact I later learned was in the Czech Republic.
It took several weeks but a reply asking for the batch # and later an address to return any remaining rounds with a promise for replacement rounds.
I returned 35 rounds and they replaced it with 100 rounds and an explanation that my ammo was surplus originally slated for a south African Police dept that had probably been stored improperly.
Long story short, decent customer service and perhaps you should tell them the issue with their ammo.

I bought 1K rounds of S&B 9mm and I've fired about 500 rounds without any issues. Used it on my 3rd gen S&W pistols, Shield, and Sig P239.

I have fired quite a bit of S&B ammo over the years in 25, 32 and
380 acp and 9mm. The 25 acp and 9mm ammo seem to be uniformly
poor while the 32 and 380 acp seem to be much better quality overall.
Their 32 acp is the hottest factory ammo I have ever chronographed
with a few rounds going over 1000 fps.

9mm S&B ammo is good, along with the Herter's "Select Grade" Cabela's sells. It functions well in Glocks, SIGS and and my S&W 940 revolver.

I've only used S&B 9mm Mak ammo and found it no dirtier than any other ammo. If your .25 pistol is of the "blow-back" design, it's going to get dirtier than a recoil-operated action.

A suggestion is to give up the Remoil and switch to FIREclean. I've always been a skeptic of "miracle" gun products, but I tried FIREclean on my 4566 with lead reloads that always dirty up a gun and all the gunk and residue literally wiped off with a rag afterwards. It's the only product I've ever used that not only lived up to the hype, but exceeded it. A bit pricey, but worth it.

I've shot a good deal of S&B in 9mm and .45 w/o issue.

I've shot it at times when I bought factory ammo (for whatever reason) and have not noticed any difference when cleaning. I shoot reloads exclusively now so I can't comment on recent batches. I normally clean my pistols around the 2000 round mark which is every couple of weeks on the one I'm shooting.

My gun was clean as a pin at the start, we could not get through 40 rounds before having issues. Hope that helps you understand a little better.

It may be because I kept this box of S&B in the truck for months. Something I wont do again.
